Gold-plated, 5-star classic from the days of Hollywood when it still made films for adults. Spencer Tracy is wonderful as the newspaper owner, a lifelong liberal and lifelong opponent of racism, who has to re-examine his creed when his daughter falls for a black doctor. Katharine Hepburn, as the liberal's wife, won the Best Actress Oscar. Sidney Poitier cleverly underplays his role as the African American fiance. Obviously, this being a 1967 movie, some of the attitudes are now old-fashioned but this is unmissable as one of the great comedy dramas.

This is a fascinating film which depicts the attitudes towards mixed marriages at that time with splendid performances from the star line up. It is a sensitive portrayal of this difficult subject with quality humorus interludes. Could watch it time and time again.

) This was a film I had not seen previously so when it was available I decided to add it to, what I consider to be, my Classic Collection. I watched it during the Christmas break and was not disappointed.The DVD quality was excellent and, altho' the story line is a bit dated by today's standards, it gave an excellent insight into the positive progression and acceptance of mixed races within marriage.Very enjoyable, well acted by established stars and well worthy of a place as a Classic.

CLASSIC MOVIEGood film but what amazed me was the quality of the dvd, as I expected the old time screen display, the quality of the picture excelent. An old film which I had seen decades ago was cleaned up to display modern day perfection.
The film itself was enjoyable particulily if you enjoy the classic films

Spencer Tracey is perfect for this role. The father of a well to do Company, who has to come to grips with his own racism. Katherine Hepburn, the mother. Who welcomes the young man. And Sidney poiter, the young african-american, the daughter loves. She is willing to elope with him, just to be with him. This is one of Spencer Tracey's best works. A white middle income family, finding out their daughter, plans to marry a well educated african american black man. The whole house is tossed on it's ear, when Tracey, doesnt agree with the union. As he slowly confronts, his racism, and personal prejudice. He comes to the real truth about happiness and the fact that a young man has finalloy come calling for his daughters hand. And he has to let her go...so she can fly in life with the man of her dreams.
Although in black and white, if the color version is available, I would personally recommend the color version.
This is always one of the first classic films, that should be on anyones personal list....
