The Grudge (DVD 2005)

I have never been as scared watching a film in my life! I watched The Ring and thought it was creepy, but not that scary. The Grudge goes way beyond, using similar creepy effects with a lot more impact.
I watched it mid-afternoon, nice sunny day outside, with my boyfriend sitting next to me on the sofa.
I ended up peeping through my fingers most of the time, I haven’t done that since I was nine years old watching Doctor Who! My boyfriend had all the hair on his arms stood on end.
This uses just the right effects to chill you. The jerky movement of the female ‘ghost’ and the weird sound effects just make your toes curl. Watch it with proper surround-sound and the creature sounds like it’s breathing down your neck.
If you like being scared you will love this film, if you watch it on your own, in the dark you are a far braver person than me.

Everything about this movie is brilliant! The effects, the actors, the script, everything. It's made by the same crew that made the orginal which I think is what made it so good. There's a few extra bits that weren't in the orginal but it just added to the mystery of what was going on in that house.

What a film....Atmospheric....Unexpected....Very scary....Great plot, characters were well developed and it really was scary!! Shivers down the spine style! Check out the extras. Very interesting and the director is quality. Great film 10/10

I found this film to be one of the scariest most disturbing horror films I have ever seen. It replaces the formulaic blood, guts and gore with a far more terrifying atmospheric feel and blood chilling sound effects. The story gives a real sense of tortured souls and unrelenting terror. Excellent - do not watch at home alone!

i decided to buy this dvd because i have heard that it is quite scary, i was not disappointed with my purchase as it lived up to its expectations.
i like the fact that they take something so simple and turn it into a shocking thriller.

Bought this as i'm a horror fan & wanted to see how it matched up to the fantastic Japanese originals.

Ok, this is a tricky one!

I watched the film first time & my immediate thoughts after were, disappointing, disappointing & disappointing!

I read a load of reviews &, for the most part, they were positive so i decided to watch it again, just to see if maybe i'd missed something.

I'm still not sure about it!

It is DEFINATELY not as good as the Japanese originals of this genre such as 'Ringu'. Though i will give credit where it's due in that the directors have kept the setting in Japan & haven't gone over-board with the 'Americannibalisation' of it.

It does have some good suspenseful moments & at times brings over an eerie atmosphere but, for me personally, these just weren't plentiful or suspenseful enough.

I didn't find any of the 'scares' very scary - but then i am quite hard to frighten (seen too many horror films)!

Although the story was there it had too many holes in it for my liking & the 'explanation' for the goings on just didn't really add up for me. You're told of the tragic events that occured there but that in itself doesn't really explain why the house is now so possessed with evil.

The acting is excellent by all & the directing can't be faulted so it is an enjoyable film to watch - just don't try to analyse the actual story too much!

A real scary film you'll need a pillow to hide behind made me really jumpy but couldn't wait to see what would happen next.

Story:
A remake of the Japanese horror hit JU-ON (widely considered to be one of the scariest movies ever made), THE GRUDGE is helmed by its original director Takeshi Shimizu. Like its predecessor, this Hollywood version of the film takes place in Tokyo, but most of the main characters are American, including Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER), a young social worker, and her peers. When Karen enters a seemingly abandoned home to look after a mentally disturbed resident, she soon discovers that there's an evil - and very aggressive - presence in the house, and it's lashing out at every person that sets foot inside. Having directed both the original JU-ON and its sequel in Japan, Shimizu was very familiar with his own tale of terror by the time he directed its 2004 incarnation. Using many of the key actors from the previous films (including Takako Fuji and Yuya Ozeki who have unforgettable roles), Shimizu recreates the story with the added advantage of a Hollywood budget (acquired with the help of producer Sam Raimi of SPIDER-MAN fame, who is also a noted horror-movie director). As with many Japanese horror films (particularly the original RING, which strongly influences this movie), THE GRUDGE relies on atmosphere over plot, resulting a series of utterly chilling moments that will leave viewers fascinated and unbelievably frightened.

I didn't know that Sarah Michelle Gellar could act so good in such a scary movie like this, but she did 1 HELL of a job performing!!!

The Ring i liked a bit better myself though, it's a bit more eerie this the grudge in my opinion.

The Japanese original versions of these movies take the horror 1 step further, but this one gives you some chills as well.

Definately Recommendable, Go See It !!!

i liked this film, thought it was random but really creepy.
i didnt think it was as scary as everyone told me it was but there were times during it that were.

good film though.

this was a very good film that i would personally recommend myself. it had a rather good twist at the end and amused me throughout

The Grudge has a real ATMOSPHERE to it. It isn't gory or gruesome just VERY SCARY. Hence it's just a 15 cert and not an 18. It is definatley worth a watch if you're into horror films. Close the curtains, turn off the lights and enjoy.

The storyline is good, it gets a little predictable as to how and why things are happening but the time-line cuts back and forth keeping you interested in what happened when, where and why.

So, it's an intelligent film. Very scarey and well written, keeping you on the edge all the way through. If you're thinking about watching it then do (in a dark room!)

Excellent movie. Makes you jump. Rented it first when it was first released, then bought it at a later date. Well worth a look. If you like a good down to earth horror then you should like this movie.

I purchased this after my daughter had seen it and said I would enjoy seeing it too. I did enjoy it and would recomend the film for any horror enthusiast.

In my opinion, Yes it is better than the Japanese version, for one, I can actually understand this version ;)
Sarah-Michelle plays an excellent part in this movie, the visual effects are good. A lot of people put this in the same kind of catergory as The Ring, but pshh The Grudge is by far the superior of the two, better storyline, better characters, much better visuals.
A great addition to any DVD collection.

Along the lines of The Ring but a tighter storyline and much more atmosphere. Its the sort of horror that keeps your toes curling as you cringe, waiting for the next awful moment. A thoroughly good nerve tingling film for horror fans,

bought it as we collect all films that sarah michelle geller has done and it was cheap enough to buy

im afraid i think this is a very lame film, no SHOCK factor, the story line is abit 'eh?!' poor acting... very dissapointed
