Album Notes
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, piano, bass, percussion); Clarence Clemons (saxophone, background vocals); David Sancious (piano, organ); Garry Tallent (bass); Vincent "Loper" Lopez (drums, background vocals). Recorded at 914 Sound Studios, Blauvelt, New York in 3 weeks.Bursting at the seams with big words and crazy rhymes, Bruce Springsteen's first album has more lyrics than a lot of rockers' entire careers. The opening line is, "Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat." John Hammond, the legendary talent scout who signed Springsteen to Columbia, is said to have heard a new Dylan. Hammond no doubt pushed for spare, folkie fare like "The Angel" and "Mary Queen Of Arkansas," on which Springsteen describes the local New Jersey color in a manner befitting a bridge-and-tunnel Van Morrison. But GREETINGS also features a handful of rock & roll songs whose spunk and spirit make it clear where Springsteen's heart really is; this was a new Dylan who wanted to dispense with "Blowin' In The Wind" and go electric right away. "It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City" and "Growin' Up" are fueled by David Sancious' rollicking piano and Springsteen's husky voice and define both a James Dean rebel persona and a giant rock & roll ambition that would guide Springsteen's music for a long time to come.

Editorial Reviews
..influenced a lot by the Band..a Van Morrison tinge every now and then...what makes Bruce totally unique and cosmically surfeiting is his words...a bold new talent with more than a mouthful to say.. [Lester Bangs]

This is great. All the songs are so deep and the lyrics are finely written. Lost In The Flood gives a touch of darkness to the album, and It's Hard to Be a Saint is just superb. A great album for any fan of music.
