Album Notes HAPPINESS IN MAGAZINES is former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon's fifth solo outing. While in Blur, Coxon was largely responsible for hastening the band's evolution from cheeky Brit-pop to heady rock experimentalism, so it is somewhat ironic that this record boasts comparatively straightforward guitar pop songs with an emphasis on tight structures and catchy hooks. In fact, the album is something of a return to form for Coxon, recalling the bratty appeal of early Blur with no-frills rockers ("Spectacular").For inspiration, Coxon looks away from the contemporary electronica and indie rock that influenced Blur's later music and back toward acts such as Marc Bolan & T. Rex, Squeeze, the Buzzcocks, and Elvis Costello. "Freakin' Out," for example, is pure punk-pop bliss, "Don't Be a Stranger" is a sing-along boogie, and the irresistible melody and clever lyrics of "Bittersweet Bundle of Misery" work the classic pop formula so perfectly that it becomes the album's standout. Except for a few guest musicians here and there, Coxon plays all the instruments himself, making HAPPINESS IN MAGAZINES a true solo effort, and possibly the artist's most accomplished and enjoyable disc to date.
Editorial Reviews 3 stars out of 5 - [Incorporates] legible, likable tunes into [Coxon's] ragged guitar rave-ups...Alternative Press (p.132) - 3 stars out of 5 - Coxon sounds best when he amps up his songs with pop chops that reference David Bowie's snappy glam by way of Supergrass... Rolling Stone
