Charming adaptation
This made-for-TV film adaptation of the book by Michelle Magorian is the story of a lonely reclusive widower living in a small village who houses a young boy, evacuated from London in the early days of WWII. The relationship is reluctant and tenuous at first, but the two begin to develop a relationship that starts as mentor and protege, but progresses quickly into a father/son relationship, reminiscient of the "Spring and Autumn" BBC series in the 1970's.
Terrific performances by John Thaw of "The Sweeny" and "Inspector Morse" fame and an equally good performance by Nick Robinson, make this a must-see.
