  One of his Best

Russell Crowe has continually pushed the boundaries further in the choosing of his films, his 'Gladiator','Master and Commander' and 'Cinderella Man' show us the many facets to the skill and the depth of his acting ability.
A GOOD YEAR, gives us another side of his vast talent, in this film he plays a brilliant Stockbroker who inherits a vineyard in France, Crowe plays this character with comedy and tenderness that is totally opposite to the ruthless stockbroker at the start of the film. A most enjoyable and family film that is basically a 'Chick Flick' as opposed to his usually 'Boy's Action 'films.
Well worth the purchase and one that will become another of your favourite films.

A lovely tale, of a change in fortune to Max's (Russel Crowe ) life. His inheritance is seen as a nuisance and when he has time away from work, he starts to appreciate the meaning of life and the efforts made by those around him. Evocatively filmed in provence where time passes by ever so slowly, compared to Russel Crowe's fast paced life in the City of London stock exchange.
It would make a lovely gift, well worth watching.

The simple, yet eye catching cinematography of the French landscape is great to watch. It is a sweet love story that is lovely to lose yourself in for over an hour.

A GOOD YEAR - A VERY GOOD FILM INDEED
Review created: 19/08/08

THIS IS A FILM THAT MAKES YOU RE-EVALUATE WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN LIFE. THE HARD HEADED RUTHLESS MERCHANT BANKER - RUSSELL CROWE GOES THROUGH AN UNEXPECTED CHANGE IN ATTITUDE REGARDING HOW AND WHERE HIS LIFE IS GOING.SET IN PROVENCE THIS CLASSIC FILM LIVES AND BREATHES FRENCH CULTURE, FROM THE VINYARDS TO THE QUAINT LITTLE TOWNS.THE JOURNEY FOR CROWE'S CHARACTER TAKES AND JOLT WHEN HIS FAVOURITE UNCLE DIES - WHO HE HAS NOT SPOKEN TO FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. CROWE'S CHARACTER IMMEDIATLEY LOOKS AT THE PROFIT VALUE FROM THE PROPERTY AND LOOKS AT SELLING TO ENHANCE HIS PERSONAL FORTUNE. A SERIES OF BELEIVABLE EVENTS OCCUR THAT STEER HIM AWAY FROM THE MERCENARY COURSE TO A MORE REALISED ATTITUDE REGARDING WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN LIFE. THE ANGLO/FRENCH RIVALRY IS EVIDENT - THE GAME OF TENNIS IS EXCELLENT CROWE POINTS TO HIS t-SHIRT AND SAYS "FRED PERRY", THE FRENCH HIRED HAND POINTS TO HIS CAP AND SAYS "HENRI LA COSTE". LET THE BATTLE OF NATIONS BEGIN. ANYBODY WHO HAS TRAVELLED AROUND FRANCE WILL LOVE THIS FILM. ANY ONE WHO LOVES A GOOD OLD FASHIONED STORY OF LOVE AND ROMANCE AGAIN WILL LIKE THIS FILM. IF YOU WANT DEATH AND MUTILATION THEN STAY AWAY AS THIS FILM IS FAR TOO INTELLECTUAL AND WELL CRAFTED FOR THE RAMBOS OF THIS WORLD.

GET A BOTTLE OF RED WINE AND SIT BACK AND ENJOY A POIGNANT FILM THAT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD FOR DAYS AFTERWARDS. CROWE IS KNOWN FOR HIS HARDMAN ROLES BUT THIS ONE SURPRISED ME AS IT SHOWS THE DEPTH OF HIS ACTING ABILITY. HIS SUPPORTING CAST IS SUPERB INCLUDING OSCAR WINNER MARION COTLLARD AS CROWES VERY BEAUTIFUL AND VERY SEDUCTIVE LOVE INTEREST. WATCH OUT FOR ABBIE CORNISH'S BUM - VERY NICE!!!

BUY THE FILM - ENJOY IT AND THINK ABOUT WHAT LIFE MEANS TO YOU.

CHEERS

Ridley Scott tries to make us jealous and Russell Crowe tries to make us laugh in the male self-discovery sub-genre, in which repellent urban warriors see the error of their ways after spending time in the country with amusing locals, simple cuisine and sexy, single waitresses. Here, it’s Crowe’s city pirate Max trekking to Provence, where his late uncle (Albert Finney) has bequeathed him a vineyard. Watching Crowe attempt to be a nimble, light-footed comedian is as unappealing as it sounds, although Scott – who’s lived in the south of France for 15 years – plays up the antagonistic Anglo- French cultural divide with humorous aplomb. And once director and star get the Jacques Tati moments out of their system, this settles into a charming character odyssey, ripe with engaging turns from Marion Cotillard, Abbie Cornish, Tom Hollander and – in affectionate flashbacks – Finney and Freddie Highmore as young Max.

  Better than good red wine
Review created: 11/07/09

This is an excellent ‘RomCom’ in every sense. It captures the French attitude to wine and love and beautifully captures the childhood of Max Skinner played by Russell Crowe.
Marion Cotillard played the delectable Fanny but for me, Albert Finney showed us why he is the best actor of his generation.

9 out of 10

  Visually Appealing

A beautiful location only slightly spares this film from a total panning - the script is, at times, horrific and the overall story is slightly muddled and confused in its emphasis and direction. Hollywood misrepresentations of the English are out in irritating force for this one; Crowe will not think of this as one of his wisest choices, the viewer is unfortunately left with a similar feeling upon watching.

A film well worth buying, watch it twice there will be masses you will miss...
It has everything, sorry kids no monsters, no sciFi, no one gets murdered, just a lovely story, and a happy ending.

Thank goodness I could find it on Ebay now I am looking for the Sound track.. and the Edmundo Ross music, I will wait...

Well done Ebay for saving me the pain of sitting in traffic and £2 to park and time to hunt for the film not in stock, waiting for it to come in and the pain all over again.. ebay is quicker and easier thanks for that..

A good Year film is Brilliant!
Review created: 01/07/08

A great film funny but with a good storyline for all the family to enjoy! Russel Crowe is brilliant in this film but he also has good backing actors. This film is true to French life in the country but is also a typical good romantic film with that necessary touch of comedy. Overall a brilliant film. 10 out of 10 definitely!
