This film was made by a guy called H. B. Halicki, who wanted to make a movie with the longest car chase ever, in the world. He succeeded, and it is probably still the longest!
H. B. Halicki was an incredible stunt driver, who did vehicle tricks and displays at American fairs and shows. He also had an amazing collection of some of the worlds finest cars, including Rolls, Ferrari's etc, most of which were used in the film, as the cars stolen to order.
The Film had a very small budget, and was made with the help of his friends, and the local people of several towns. The firemen were played by local firemen the police were the local police, and so on. Most of the "actors" were his friends, and the quality of the acting is a little poor, but this doesn't spoil the film at all, it gives it a raw natural feel. The fashons of 1974 also make you smile!
The most important part of this film is the last 45 minutes, which is a non stop car chase, with hundereds of cars getting totaled! Its pure heaven if like me you love a good old car chase, with tyres screaming and big American V8's roaring! H. B. Halicki did most of the driving, and there were no special effects or camera tricks, the stunts were real and very dangerous, and people diving out of the way of cars were jumping quite literally for their lives!
The star of the film, Elenor, is a yellow, 1970 Mach 1 Mustang (I think) which was standard except for a Nascar roll cage, after many of the stunts they had to replace the burst radiator and bash out the worst dents with a sledge hammer!
I'd recomend this film to any petrol heads, and this Dvd will take pride of place at the top of my film collection, along side Ronin, The Blues Brothers, The Driver and the Dukes of Hazzard!
P.S. forget you ever saw the Nicolas Cage version.

  45+ MINUTES car-chase, AWESOME!

Story:
They are out to steal forty-eight cars in one week. The first forty-seven are easy, but forty-eight is a different story...

Comments:
LOVED this movie! ESPECIALLY the cars they picked to steal!
The car-chasing was really funny, a guy sees his car being stolen, jumps drunk in his second car, chases it, crashes, tells the cops his car is stolen, they arrive back at his house, and the thief has parked it there again, it was a JOY-RIDE :-D

The last car-chase was truely beautifull, after a while you get this feeling like '' yeah, yeah, i've seen a few cars being stolen, so what's new? '' then the REAL chase begins! over 45 MINUTES non-stop car-chasing where the guy tries to get away, hits almost everything on his path, drives on the side-walk, crashes to a lamppost on the freeway, and he keeps on driving in his Eleanor ( sportscar )

Then finally at the end, he sees a identical sportscar, who just enters a car-wash, he drives in, switches cars, and gets away clean.

Awesome movie, very mutch recommendable. A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If you have seen the remake of this film and you thought that was good, well all i can say is that it does'nt come anywhere close to this superb original classic, this film is action packed with a 40 minute car chase,an absolute must see!

This film takes me back to my young days, when everyone was just buying their Betamax video players. The acting is bad! but the car chase is f brill! A must see. The real "ELEANOR".

  A hard to find classic!

As the title says, A hard to find classic. Dont be put off by the frankly mediocre remake with Nick Cage and Angelina Jolie. If you like a good car chase movie, this is the benchmark to which all others are judged by. No CGI or fast cut scenes in this one, just good REAL driving, long shots and some of the finest cars of the era. A 93 minute movie, 40 minutes of which is the Eleanor chase alone.
A piece of history, as this was the first film was written, produced, directed and distributed by one person - the star of the film, the very excellent H.B. Halcki.
A credit to the seller for finding this rare movie.
Five thumbs up.
Now if only I could find the sequel to it, "Junkman - Gone in 60 seconds 2" , in region 2 dvd, my collection would be complete. ;-)

If you like old 70's car films where the cars we're actually being driven instead of a computer images etc then have a look at this great classic

After watching this movie I thought it was really good action wise. The car chases and crashes were awesome. They were totally ahead of there time in doing the stunts. I love american muscle cars and I totally got my fix eleanor is an amazing car. Although the acting was a bit wooden in some parts but I think they were just going by the seat of their pants just to get the amazing car scenes in. Top notch movie none the less!

  Better chase sequences than Bullitt!
Review created: 03/08/09

The way the film is made is typical from that era with voice overs etc. Story line is OK, but what makes this film is the cars, the real action stunts (no stupid CGI cars doing the impossible like in the remake). Everyone raved about Bullitt, but I found that boring, where as this was more watchable and much, much more car action. For petrol heads its great, otherwise not so great.

  The original and best

Forgot how good this movie was until I watched it again. The remake has nothing on this movie. The main car chase at the end is a work of art! It also has an amusing twist to it that the remake never used.
Flares, big moustaches, muscle cars and dangerous driving - how could this not be a great movie?!

This movie is low budget and acting is not great if your looking for another multi million dollar movie this isnt it. If you are a car guy or girl and love the movie bullet this movie beats it in many ways. In other words if you love the root of this movie man and mechine and all out performance this is a great movie ,a cult classic.
