Heartwarming, poignant family drama
This is one of my absolute favourite films. Oscar winning performances by Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda portray the poignancy of an ageing couple, tormented by fear of death and losing each other, coping with the onset of infirmity, yet feistily hanging on to their independence. The love-hate relationship with their daughter, Jane Fonda, and the experience of coming face to face with the younger generation in the shape of her partner's teenage son left with them for a brief stay are beautifully written. It is common knowledge that the real-life estrangement of Jane and Henry Fonda served to underscore their portrayal and their reconciliation left the whole film crew in tears. Unmissable. Oh, and the music is charming, too.
