The Golden Compass... could have been better.

Set in a parallel world, this film revolves around a magical device (alethiometer) which can tell the holder the truth of the moment - powered by a magical substance called 'dust'.

This film has great special effects, particularly the animation of the Ice-Bears, but I found the film as a whole terribly disappointing.

Not having read the Pullman books, I had nothing to go on. The script failed to draw me into the film and left me wondering if much of the book had not been transcribed to the movie format.

Nicole Kidman (Mrs Coulter) acts well as the wicked woman, who's performing experiments on children and their daemons (extensions of the soul). Daniel Craig (Lord Azriel) barely shows in this first instalment, but perhaps he has a greater role to play later on.

The character played by Sam Neill (Mr Scorsby) shows some intrigue and promise.

The main character (Lyra) is well acted but fails to have the same impact as major child characters is similar genre films.

Hopefully viewer familiarity will give increased understanding to the rest of this series.

Very disappointing film of the first book of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials epic. Muddled and confusing - and probably almost incomprehensible to anyone who has not read the books. New characters pop up every few minutes and much is left unexplained. But the performances are uniformly good and the special effects convincing and clever. Young Dakota Blue Richards does pretty well as the young heroine and Nicole Kidman is excellent as the evil Mrs Coulter. Although the film cries out for a sequel - or even two - the film was not a huge hit at the box office and a follow-up movie may not arrive. . .

WELL WHAT CAN I SAY IT NOT AS GOOD AS THEY MADE IT OUT TO BE.I THOUGHT FROM THE TRAILERS IT WAS GOING TO BE A GOOD FILM BY DISNEY BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT WAS NOT TO BE. THE STORY LINE COULD BE BETTER. I COULD NOT GET INTO THE STORY UNTILL NEAR THE END AND OF COURSE THERE IS GOING TO BE A FOLLOW ON FOR THE GOLDEN COMPASS. I GOT THAT FROM THE WAY IT ENDED. SORRY I COULD NOT GIVE IT A BETTER REVIEW. BUT IT WAS A LET DOWN. FOR ME THAT IS I DO NOT KNOW WHAT ANY ONE ELSE THINKS.

Good acting and special effects. Poor storytelling

I have not read the book so I can't comment on how close the movie follows it. However, as a movie, it is so poorly edited to be barely comprehensible. The whole movie seems like every other scene has been cut out. Characters and situations are not explained, relationships are not developed, and the plot is left with gaping holes. Fans of the book will, no doubt, be able to fill in the details. For the rest of us, I would not bother. This is a shame because the acting is good and well-cast. The special effects are equally impressive. If the movie had lasted another hour, it probably would have been terrific. Hopefully, a director's cut will be released some day that redeems this travesty.

bought this DVD for a girlfriend after taking her to the cinema to see it.

whilst the film was ok wich was good during a polar bear duel i felt this was not the new fantasy trilogy that it was hyped up to be

not a bad watch but still not a new lord of the rings, but good for younger viewers.

Not too bad to watch when there is nothing else to do. I did enjoy it but as I have read the book a number of times I could tell there was lots left out from the it, but I suppose they couldn't include everything.

Really looked forward to watching it but I'm afraid I found it very dissappointing. It is a kids film really, I found the acting wooden and annoying. I haven't read the book though, but to be fair I don't think I would bother now.

I was expecting more excitement and really good graphics but this is definitely a child's film. It is good but won't appeal to many over 12s. There were great chunks of the book cut out and I think the film missed the main point of the book.

The story concerns Lyra, an orphan living in a fantastical parallel universe in which a dogmatic theocracy called the Magisterium threatens to dominate the world. When Lyra's friend is kidnapped, she travels to the far North in an attempt to rescue him and rejoin her uncle.

  WATCHABLE but once only!
Review created: 02/12/08

I bought this dvd because it seemed like a good fantasy blockbuster and thought I would enjoy it as much as films such as Narnia, etc.. However, whilst it was watchable and enjoyable, I would not watch it again. My daughter who started out watching the film lost interest and started another activity. I watched it once and sold the dvd off to another eBayer.

  The Golden Compass
Review created: 27/11/08(updated 06/01/09)

Nicole Kidman stars alongside a very talent packed cast in this brilliantly produced and directed film with a fantasy sci- fiction theme.

Child lead, Lyra, played by Dakota Fanning is superb, the story is comprehensive and an action packed adventure suitable for a wide age range, starting at about 6 yrs, though children appreciate such films on different levels, ie visually, action/noise etc.

My daughter, aged 8 loved the animal perspective and the idea of having animal guides/like guardian angels and she thoroughly enjoyed the film- a great film! 5*
