Album Notes The Go-Betweens: Robert Forster, Grant McLenna (vocals, guitar); Robert Vickers (bass); Lindy Morrison (drums).Additional personnel includes: Chris Tomlin, Sally Herbert (violin); Sue Dench (viola); Audrey Riley (cello); Dean B. Speedwell (bassoon, accordion, piano, organ, vibraphone); Tracey Thorn (background vocals).Recorded at Berry Street Studios, London, England between October and November 1985.LIBERTY BELLE & THE BLACK DIAMOND EXPRESS, the fourth Go-Betweens album, introduces new elements into the band's repertoire in the form of a string section and even a bassoon. It is also one of those rare albums that contains a truly inspired lyric, the kind that stays with you long after the last track ends. The lyric is "When the rain hit the roof/With the sound of a finished kiss/Like a lip lifted from a lip" from "The Wrong Road." When presented with as perfect an encapsulation of human experience as this, you know you are in the presence of greatness. In addition to "The Wrong Road," standouts include the bright, chugging "Spring Rain," the hopeful pursuit of an unobtainable woman in "Head Full of Steam," and the burning honesty of "Apology Accepted." Considered by many to be the band's best, LIBERTY BELLE is a high point in 1980s music; in fact, the only thing wrong with this record is that it has to end when it ought to go on forever.
