Winner of 5 Academy Awards statuettes, including Best Picture and Best Actor; Gladiator receives the 'Extended Special Edition' treatment. Personally overseen by director Ridley Scott, this 3-disc edition is loaded with new bonus materials and features 17 minutes of additional footage not shown in cinemas. This is the ultimate Gladiatorial experience! The great Roman General Maximus (Russell Crowe) has once again led the legions to victory on the battlefield. The war won, Maximus dreams of home, wanting only to return to his wife and son; however, the dying Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) has one more duty for the general - to assume the mantle of his power. Jealous of Maximus' favour with the Emperor, the heir to the throne, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), orders his execution - and that of his family. Barely escaping death, Maximus is forced into slavery and trained as a gladiator in the arena where his fame grows. Now he has come to Rome, intent on avenging the murder of his wife and son by killing the new emperor; Commodus.... Review ID: 10000000001399788 Was this review helpful? In the introduction by Ridley Scott to this extended version he tells us that this is NOT the Director's Cut, and the Theatrical version was in fact his cut of the film. So why has this been wheeled out to the public? Ahem...££££££....$$$$$....! There's only fifteen minutes added to the film and none of these are particularly awe inspiring additions. There are 2 discs of extras, but so what?! There is nothing special about this cut except the cynacism with which it has been released to the public. It is worth listening to the director's commentary with Russell Crowe on as well, if anything just to hear what an idiot Crowe is and what a nightmare he must actually be to work with. I was hoping that Gladiator Extended Cut would make everything good with a somewhat mishmashed epic that it was - a cross between Spartacus and The Fall Of The Roman Empire. Unlike the Director's Cut (Difinitive Edition) of Kingdom of Heaven or the superb Director's Cut of Troy (whose theatrical version was shallow and annoying) this extended version is JUST THAT - extended, for no particulalry good reason. If you don't already have the film then yes it is worth buying, but don't pay any extra for the Extended version. Review ID: 10000000006938576 Was this review helpful?
