I’m starting to become concerned all my reviews are in praise of the film in question. I’m like a cave troll who’s just discovered the magic box with small people in and I think everything I watch is magic.
And I’m not going to change my habits for this review.
I loved this film!
It could have slotted into my Nicolas Cage collection, or my comic book collection, depending on how good it was as a comic book adaptation. Suffice to say, it’s gone into the latter.
The effects were excellent, not over the top, very stylish.
Only once in the film did I feel ‘aware of the acting’, and that was surprisingly Nicolas Cage. Ok, yes I know they’re obviously acting, I mean flaming skeleton actors aren’t easy to come by, but you know what I mean. I immerse myself so totally in the action I dislike being pulled back to reality by ‘acting’.
Sam Elliott is as always a complete joy to watch in the Road House type role he does so very well.
If you’re a petrol-head, you’ll love the bikes, both real and CGI.
If you’re a comic book fan, you’ll love the classic good vs evil storyline.
If you’re male there’s Eva Mendez.
If you’re female and young there’s Matt Young, or middle aged & a bit weird like me, the wonderful Sam Elliott.
Though it’s a 15 I’d be happy to allow my 11 and 13 year olds to watch it, it’s a bit scary & there’s plenty of fantasy violence but it’s not ‘adult’ if you get my drift, which is heart-warming as far as I’m concerned. It is a comic adaptation after all.
