George Lewis - The Beverly Caverns Sessions (CD 1995)

I bought this CD because it features the George Lewis Band at a time when it was at its best. This is a group of muscicians who had played with each other for many years and were well versed in the New Orleans ensemble style. As usual with recordings by this Band the list of tracks includes some hardy perennials like Down By The Riverside, Just A Closer Walk With Thee and Burgundy Street Blues but there are some interesting variations and less recorded tunes like Four Or Five Times and Washington And Lee Swing. Intending purchasers may be put off by the fact that this is a live recording but the audience is well behaved and the recording quality is of a high standard. This CD is a good representation of the music of George lewis and is a worthy addition to a jazz fan's library.
