Garmin eTrex Summit Handheld GPS Receiver

This is a quality GPS, it works very well easy to use, even my son can use it, we have use the Summit to track our Sunday walks over the woods and find it very easy to handle, we would recommend this GPS to anyone starting out, we have found that this GPS will do everything you would want from a SATNAV

QUALITY GPS

The Garmin eTrex Summit Handheld GPS unit is a great bomb proof bit of kit. It is quick to start getting pings from the GPS sats and gives you a good pin point location fast in terms of 2D map and elevation. We bought a few sometime ago and used it on an event and it performed 100% with out any major recharging issues.

We recently sold one and it went for a good price, a good sign that people value this unit. We also got a few Colorado 300's recently, a nice bit of kit much more advanced, but takes much longer to start up and get pings from Sats, which will use the batteries quicker or slow you down if you have to keep switching it off and on to save battery life... this is not a problem with the eTrex Summit.

As a hill walker I've avoided complicated devices on the hills. But getting lost in cloud in the Welsh hills last September persuaded me that a GPS was a good idea, if only to give the position.
So I was looking for a simple GPS which would tell me exactly that, and maybe distance covered and speed, so I decided to look into the eTrex Summit. The fact that this also gives height was what attracted me because it also tells me my ascending/descending rates and totals.
I also looked for a black and white screen because battery last so much longer. (I'm running at well over 16 hours at the moment.) And so I'm delighted with this little beastie. I doubt I will use the "map" function (rather a crummy little path on a plain background) but the other items are good. The one disappointment is that I can't assemble all the information I like to see on one screen: position, direction, vertical/horizontal velocities, distance to waypoint. Plenty of room on the screen for that lot but instead it wants to show me a big compass in the middle! That would mean I could use it without button-pushing. Oh well, can't have everything I suppose. But altogether a big plus for this unit. If you can use a map and altimeter and just want to confirm where you are then this is great value.

Bought it for cross-country running, rather than walking, and is rather impractical for that purpose. But, overall, not disappointed.

I bought this GPSr to replace an older Garmin Etrex that was starting to show the wear and tear of years on the trail. The Summit HC is very user friendly, especially to anyone familiar with other Etrex models. The HC model finds and keeps signal really well, even in places where other GPSrs I've used have struggled. The magnetic compass is a very useful tool, meaning you don't have to start moving for the unit to tell you which direction you need to go in (no walking 20 metres one way then turning round!) and of course the geocaching mode comes in very handy to a tupperware hunter like me!
