Bought my 1st GPS way back in 1985, a Trimble unit which was a little clumsy, slow to aquire (up to half an hour initiating and 4 to 5 mins from cold). It was marketed then at £800 and I got mine on offer at £500, ate AA batteries 4 at a time in a couple of hours but was reasonably accurate when not controlled by the American dilution of position limitations. All you got were figures of northings and eastings which you transferred to OS maps. I must have been dead keen, if not intrigued by this new device.
My 2nd unit was a Garmin Etrex Vista. The technical advances were amazing but now common place.I got a roads and recreational downloadable map display ( the unit has a 20 meg memory) and could now store routes and tracks. It had an electronic compass and altitude indication together with all the usual ETA/av speed data which we are now accustomed to.
I have just purchased my GARMIN 60CSx with removeable 64 meg replaceable micro SD card. I have replaced it with a 2 gig card and loaded the Garmin Topo mapping of Great Britain complete ( 1,8 gig). I accept that the OS detail is somewhat limited but I am thrilled to bits with the whole performance of this unit. The advertised specs for this unit are accurate including the incredible battery life from just 2 AA cells. The sensitivity is so much improved it should be one of the key features when purchasing. I search and find 8 sattelite fixes indoors in a matter of seconds and walking in woods or valleys do not impede this reception significanfly. When you walk off road, you now have contour mapping which gives me enough confidence to leave the map in my sack. The full colour screen is excellent and I really cannot fault any of the features on this device although I have not discovered all of the attributes.
I can only look forward with antcipation now to when fully detailed and compatible OS mapping becomes available, and to me this will herald the disposal of my soggy, worn out maps.
Heartily reccommend this unit to any who like technical gadgets and want the safety and assurance backup, afforded by this equipment, for their orienteering projects.

  Excellent handheld receiver

As GPS receivers go, this has to be one of the more fancy in the marketplace. It's got excellent (truly!) reception, and has a simple and easy to use menu interface. The unit it pretty light, and yet feels robust - the 30 mins of waterproofing will surely come in useful too..

Battery life is about 20 hours, but will drop with backligh usage.. It's probably seriously worth considering investing in some rechargeable AA batteries.

The basemaps it comes with are region specific, so if, like me, you buy one from the US, you'll need to invest in some maps.. It's worth bearing in mind though that there are some excellent maps available which don't get supplied with the UK version either.. The UK Topo V2 mapset is worth investing in, and the unit will make full use of the detail.

I wanted the unit as a multi-purpose GPS unit, for walking and cycling.. It'll do this standing on it's head!

As with most things - you get what you pay for.. :)

  Great GPS...
Review created: 06/05/07

Iv used this unit so far in Wales ( Brecon Beakons ) and also in the New Forest.
I got the American vertion and apart from the base maps there is no difference! It is the same spec as the Euro, so buy with confidence if you like reasonable prices as opposed to hiked up take the p*ss prices we pay in the UK!!
Anyway, the unit is very robust! except from the clip that is supplies with it! it broke on my first outing with it! it was clipped onto the front of a shoulder strap of my Burgan and although the clip itself didnt come off the locking pin that stops it from comming out of the quick relese malfunctioned and it fell out of the slide twice!! onto tarmac! but! it didnt scratch!! it landed on the screen both times but didnt mark it.. so thats good..
The America base map dose have some road for the uk.. so if your planning 'Off road' routes your going to be ok.. if you want to route by road then you have to get your credit card out and start crying.. BUT.. if your good at searching and can use a computor you WILL find a way round that!!
There are lots of Garmin software about but not ALL is compatable with the 60CSX.. so be carefull what you buy!! or download!!
Iv managed to get lots of maps working on mine, and it works pretty good too.. although it would NEVER replace my TomTom for road routes!! but you will find when you install Metro Guide there are LOADS of POI'S!!
Now.. The TOPO.. What a CROC!! i wouldnt buy if if my life depended on it!! its simply substandard.. the detail is, well.. non existant!! if your expecting ANYTHING like OS then DREAM ON!!! its truly awfull..
OUt of the box it is compatable with Memory Map.. Which has to be the ONLY usefull mapping program availiable to date! BUT!! although on your nice shiny box it says its compatable with Memory Map (MM) it is limited!!
Ok, you work out your route with MM. Then you transfer it to 60CSX and follow your route.. ALWAYS back this with a Map & Compass.. Because, if your using the TOPO maps with your Garmin they WONT tally up!! your position will be correct (Long/Lat) but it will show you elsewhere on the map!! they are not compatable!! your transfered route WILL NOT line up with the shown route on the device!! the reason is they are written in different code! (well, something like that.) saerch the net.. theres LOADS onit..
I use the Metro Guide maps.. if youve checked the route correcly then you wont need Topo.. i also have MM on my PDA (which i carry if iv not got my map) i look at the PDA for Topo info.. then back to Garmin.. MOSTLY i use a map..
I must say.. I have felt totaly at ease with its accuracy.. i could quite easily leave my map at home and go with the Gamen allone! especialy if iv pre loaded a route from MM.. but i wouldnt as i know that GPS can be.. well, its run by the US GOV so i'll say no more..
All in all.. its a good little unit. the mapping needs to be looked at and Garmin should make it open source.. and lisenced to use MM maps.. they are JUST like the OS maps.. Thats my only gripe..
BUY ONE.......... I love it..

This is a fantastic GPS unit. They only flaw i would say is being limited to the 2025 maps so you cant have topo and metro maps together. Other than that the product has excellent build quality and software. Shame it doesn't support Macs! and it is also a shame (considering the size) that there isn't a built in 2 way radio. Also it is a shame there is no voice navigation. But as a superb GPS with incredibly good reception (i can get reception in my basement flat!) it cant be beat, the pedestrians best friend however if only they had voice included the could have the perfect drivers friend as well. All in all a great product.

Very promising. Worked fine during a short trip on a mountain. Battery life a problem although. Very short battery life possibly due to colour screen. Feels robust and is easy to use.

Sorry not much to say.... good bit of kit but not cheap, installed garmin topo uk which gives a bit more detail but still poor compared to memory map, save your money and go for a cheaper model and a good os map
