Garmin GPS 12 Handheld GPS Receiver

An incredibly robust model, the strongest Garmin have made, and used by the military of many countries. Good reception with a clear screen display and simple to operate. I think this is the best non map display handheld GPS unit ever made.

I bought this GPS because I had had the same model previously, so I was familiar with all the features. It is excellent when out on Dartmoor or doing my other hobby, geocaching. You can store up to 500 waypoints, mark your position when you leave the car park, or check the proximity of waypoints. With a 10 figure grid reference on an Ordnance Survey map, you can be within feet of what you are looking for, which is very useful when it is just a little box hidden in the rocks!

Dislike:

It's a bit bulky and not very modern looking, but it IS old!! It is supposed to have fast acquisition of the satellites but I think it is quite slow.

The product was as described, no damage and it is working perfectly, meet the conditions needed for use in my application testing.

THE GPS IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE PERSON USING IT AND BY THIS I MEAN THAT THEY NEED TO UNDERSTAND:
1. HOW TO SET UP THE GPS BY GIVING IT THE CORRECT DATA TO ALLOW IT TO PERFORM TO ITS BEST.

2.HOW THE GPS FINDS THE SATALLITES.

are above you in the sky at any given time. so if it shows you that 7 of your 9 sats are in the east at that time then obviously it is going to be slow if your 12paraell reciever is pointing to the west!!!! the sats are moving all the time but their movement is shown on the screen.

HAVING USED MANY DIFFERENT HAND HELD GPS AROUND THE WORLD,, THE GARMIN 12 IS BY FAR THE BEST AND MOST USER FRIENDLY, OF THE CIVILIAN GPS.

This is a great little handheld gps. It works great and never lets me down when I need it. Only drawback and it is a minor one. It takes a little while to aquire satellites, but once it does, man does it perform well. You definately will enjoy using one of these and it is a bargain at the prices you can buy them for on ebay. I know when i purchased mine a few years back, i cost $169.99 new.
All in all, I think it is the best bang for the buck right now in the handheld gps market.

Although these are an old and discontinued model and not colour they do have advantages over some newer models. In particular the old serial port connector uses a 9 pin D type connector. These are industrial strength milspec connectors that fasten with screws. Much better than the new-fangled USB connectors that are fitted to modern GPS receivers. There is a slight drawback that the Garmin 12 volt power lead (which has a built-in voltage reducer)is costly. Sensitivity is good and in spite of what some of the sillier boating magazines state, the receiver will work OK inside the cabin of a GRP yacht. The receiver needs a bracket that holds it at an angle of about 45 degrees. If mounted vertically it will not work. The Garmin brackets usually cost about £50 and being plastic they can get broken quite easily when the boat lurches owing to heavy weather. If one has access to metalworking equipment (in particular a metal folder) an excellent bracket can be made from stainless steel. I made one for "Captain Bligh" who said "That's ten times better than the Garmin one that costs fifty quid and I've broken three already!" Strips of 1/2" wide Velcro were glued to the sides of the GPS and the insides of the mounting and the resulting grip is amazing. (to remove the Garmin the U shaped stainless has to be sprung apart to release the Velcro) As the glue and Velcro are both held in compression by the springy stainless, the bond is held in shear not tension, hence the amazing grip. The best bit of course is when one connects the GPS to a laptop running a charts programme. Amazing! Be sure to buy some "Sutars" cig lighter sockets to supply the power as these are rustless unlike the automobile type. A waterproof in-line fuse holder (Bulgin sold by Maplin) is also a good idea.
