This is a class film from start to finish.The length of two hours and forty minutes does not seem to drag by,and there are plenty of juicy bits to keep you entertained,although I did expect more fighting in it such as the opening mega battle.Daniel Dey Lewis,Leo Di Caprio and Cameron Diaz - What a trio of actors/tress.Butcher Bill steals the show for me.One flaw,though-Can't help but feel that Leonardo's 'scar' from Bill healed very,very quickly!If you buy this,get the 2 dvd set,as there are TONS of extra features on there.Cheers all,xxx.

New York, 1846 - a brutal gang battle turns the snowy ground muddy with blood. Fifteen years later Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) returns to the Five Points district of Manhattan to avenge his father's death at the hands of Bill "The Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis).

Leader of the anti-immigrant 'Native Americans' gang, Bill rules the neighbourhood with fear. Still, he happily employs this street-savvy unknown, who begins to find the father he lost in the man he must kill.

"Hamlet" is an obvious influence on the screenwriters and the plot isn't the only factor reminiscent of the stage. There's an expansive, histrionic aspect to Day-Lewis' phenomenal performance as the arch villain, and a theatrical quality to the dialogue, which frequently appropriates biblical language.

There's nothing stage-bound about the action, though - the violent, gripping spectacle that plays out against a perfectly realised recreation of 19th century New York.

DiCaprio quietly impresses, as does Cameron Diaz as his pickpocket squeeze, but their story is secondary to Scorsese's thematic concerns, as a simple tale of revenge escalates into a portrait of class, race and religious war - an incendiary assault on the foundations of the so-called land of the free.

The finished picture may not be as assured or well-paced as Scorsese's best works - "GoodFellas", "Taxi Driver" - but it has the energy and passion of "Mean Streets" writ large. A work of staggering ambition, grandeur and terrible beauty. In a word: majestic.

I watched this one on TV and only did because I switched over and it was on. I have to say, from the title, it was not one I would have gone out of my way to see but it turns out it is a bloody good film. Fantastic in fact! I never really knew that is what it was like in New York years ago, seemingly a lawless place run by gang members. The fire Brigade would rob a house rather than put out the fire etc etc. If you have not seen this and are wondering what it is like, it is great! Well worth being part of anyones DVD collection.
If you like gangster style films, you will like this.. If you like History, this is a good one also. Educational aswel.

Great Action Film the screen writing and casting are excellent with outstanding performances from all involved.
This really is a film to watch and can be watched time and time again.

Decided to buy this DVD because we had seen the film previously & really enjoyed and it, it was one of those films you felt you could watch again. Gangs of New York tells of a time in American History - it is interesting, the characters are well chosen for their parts & the whole story is played out well. It can be a little violent at times but I don't feel it goes beyond what actually happened at the time. Since buying it we've watched it more than once which is something I like about a film, that no matter how many times you watch it you see or hear something you didn't catch the first time.

I bought Gangs of new york as i had seen the film once before and had throughly enjoyed it. I have never been a big fan of Leonardo Dicaprio but he is first class in this film as is Daniel Day Lewis and Cameron Diaz(Biased on her though lol)
Good story(If a little predictable) with elements of fact thrown in for good measure. Extras on the 2nd DVD are very good giving the history of that part of new york and the gangs in that area.
All in all a good buy and now one of my most favourite movies.

great flick but customes great flick but customes should have been alot more grubier for the times. sorcese at his best when it comes to violence and detail to corruption. good to see di caprio in a non stereo typical for the pretty boy have been alot more grubier for times.

Daniel Day Lewis so dominates this film as Butcher Bill, you'll have nightmares of him standing over you with a meat cleaver!! It's a gory and violent story of immigrant gangs at the end of the 19th century in New York. It's well made, DiCaprio and Diaz are good, but it's Day Lewis's film. The movie was nominated for no fewer than 10 Oscars but failed to win any. It deserved to win a few at least.

always wanted to see this film. very glad i brought this film.as good as i thought.plenty of action with all the thought gone into how things have changed over the years. how bad things where and how the usa used people who came to there country for a better life .chucked straight into the war thay had at the time brilliant film

great film one of my favourites highly recommended! Bought it cos i have seen it before but better second time of watching!

i must confess i wasnt that fussed about watching it but did to shut me boyfriend up. it rocks, a great film a true epic and not a dull moment or a bum actor the cast is amazing and in not a dicaprio fa but that man can act! its an eye opener of the violance of the civil war! it will end up as much of a classic as gone with the wind

I decided to buy this item for my son for Christmas. Although this film is not my taste I can appreciate why my son is so enamoured of it. The storyline is excellent and shows the hardships of the Irish community at that time. Following this story it is not hard to see how Irelands troubles evolved. It had very strong stars and the acting is incredible. Tis is a must for any movie buff.

I was pleseantly surprised to find excellent packaging, excellent case and cover and excellent folding holders inside the case. This is without a doubt the best DVD item I have bought on ebay. Thank you.

I really liked all of the battle scenes when i saw it on t.v (Which is why i bought it) because, admittedly i'm not that sophisticated when it comes to movies. I thought it was quite an original picture, an 18th century romantic-violent-and-rather-funny-in-places bloodfest with a touch of gang warfare!!

Don't buy if you would rather have The Sound of Music, for instance, over Carrie!!

8/10 on the Jack scale.

Daniel Day Lewis is at his brilliant best, well supported by a very strong cast including Cameron Diaz and Leonardo Dicaprio absolutely top class scorcese movie

This is the finest film show casing the talents of some of the best british and Irish acting talent , the first fight seen is the best example of all out street fighting that exists in cinema today , the characters are some of the most dynamic and truly complex and that can be found in modern cinema , this film is a true epic and deserves all the plaudits that it receives , if you consider that the script was doing the rounds of hollywood for 30 years before miramax took a leap of faith ....

Probably the last epic movie to be made with real people and real sets. An amazing and brutal portrayal of New York gangland during the middle of the 19th century. Drawing its inspiration from the book of the same name, published in the early 20s, I think it is Scorseses finest hour. I bought it after watching it on tv one night and thinking to myself "This is a film I HAVE to own". I highly reccomend this film to be in any discerning film buffs collection.
