This is as close as you can get to a SLR but shoots videos. It's a brilliant camera well worth the price. Don't be fooled because it's EXACTLY the same as the S9100 (released in the USA as S9100 and in Europe as S9600). I got the S9100 on eBay for an absolute bargain because I think buyers thought the S9600 was a newer model. Show me the difference and I'll eat my XD card!!! I've already reviewed the S9100. I can't think af any features it doesn't have, wide angle lens, big ISO range, fixed zoom lens, good flash with a Hot Shoe for a better one, lots of megapixels and lots and lots of options on the outside and in the menu. You can add wide angle and telephoto lens for approx £50 and the Fuji case for £15. But these are optional. Get a 1 x hr charger and some rechargeable AA's and you have everything you possibly need. Just don't drop it 'cause it's heavy. I sympathise with the person who uses 64 bit computing but at least you know it doesn't run on those machines via a USB connection. Thats why I like reviews because they're very helpful. I personally use card-readers because they are much quicker and don't like wired connections .....too messy! Keep this camera for good quality photographs and use your compacts for fun. Highly recommended purchase which won't fit into a handbag.

No drivers for 64 bit computers.

A serious point to remember for all owners of computers with 64 bit Intel or AMD processors that Fujifilm have not produced any drivers for these processors and are not planning to do so. So when you plug in your camera with the USB cable it wont work.
The only way to get your pics on your hard drive is with a separate card reader.

  excellant camera for the price

I've only used cheap point and shoot cameras in the past and wanted to step up a notch. I'd read plenty of reviews about the Fuji 9600 and it was very highly thought of, easily as good as a DSLR costing more than double what i paid. Its functions are well laid out and easy to access when in use. I love the manual zoom rather than motor driven as in other cameras (it doesn't flatten your batteries and gives you finer control). With additional filters that screw to the end of the lens and using either a telephoto or wide angle add on lens there isn't much you can't do with it. Next purchases will be a tripod and a decent case to carry everything around (filters, lenses, batteries, meory cards, etc). It will take some getting used to but i feel a college course on photography will be my next step to taking better pictures. You can use the excellant auto settings and let the camera do everything for you but you can easily adjust the settings and get very good results.

All in all i would recommend the camera to anyone wishing to move up from point and shoot to SLR but don't want to make the expensive step of actually buying an SLR camera. Shop around and you can find the camera for £150 easily.

I brought this camera as an upgrade to my last Fuji.
It is as close to an SLR without actually being one. The manual zoom is great and you have the added zoom fine tuner added dial just above the zoom dial.
It is light weight and no bigger than a regular digital camera of this standard.
Add a flash unit as I have and you have a good semi pro setup.
This is a camera that you can build upon by buying tele and wide lenses, macro and filters too. I will be with this camera for a good while yet as it is versatile and fairly easy to use. It also has the video option and microphone that you can switch to at a moments notice. Memory cards are a reasonable price and i recommend getting at least a 2gig for general usage and a 4 gig for more advanced and video usage.
All in all a decent piece of kit. Please read the instructions prior to use as it could all get a little confusing and practice, practice, practice.

A good manual zoom lens much better than those fiddly buttons, fold out lcd screen is very useful, ability to be able to use a external flashgun, good auto-focus i think it's a good alternative to an dslr in fact it's so like one you ca'nt tell your not using one, viewfinders not too bad but it's a pity it's not an optical one,all in all it's well worth considering if your thinking of buying one.

  Great Bridge Camera
Review created: 06/07/08

I do love the fact that the camera feels like a pro camera (and is). It is a wonderful bridge between compact cameras and SLR cameras. I always wanted to learn more about photography and this is a great camera to start with.

For its size it is really not a heavy camera and well worth the price.

I surely recommend it for those you do not only want to aim and snap a photo but want to have fun with light and features..

When you have +2D glasses, the focusing and framing is not so easy as it was when you were in high school :-) I had certain problems with getting diopter for analog Pentax and was reluctant to go for digital SLR because of sight problems. When I read that this camera has diopter correction I went for it. When it arrived I hardly noticed the wheel, but it worked fine. So plus No 1 - eye correction of decent range. Plus No 2 - 4 AA batteries for power. If your rechargeables are dry, buy alkalines on any corner and be happy (for a short while :-)
The bonuses are too many to count, and other reviews will tell you more, I just wanted to share my delights :-)

  Fujifilm S9600 Digital Camera Review
Review created: 30/05/08

The best feature of this camera (in my humble opinion) is definitely the Manual Zoom, one twist of the Zoom Ring on the lens & you're instantly there (no more waiting for the digital zoom). I find the camera is consistantly reliable giving Excellent Picture Quality, Lightning Fast Startup Time & Zero Shutter-Lag (especially good for those action sequences like sports or for taking photos of the kids who always fidget).

Under low light 'real life' conditions such as indoors is where the camera really shines. You can be in a Pitch Black Room & still take a Perfect Photo using this camera as it has an 'Auto-Focus Assist Lamp' (it looks like something from 'The Matrix') it really is the bees knees! Another excellent feature of the camera is the 'Titlable LCD Monitor'. Even when holding the camera up above your head (eg. when in a crowd) or when holding the camera at waist height (eg. taking photo's of the grandkids) you can always clearly see your shot, a real design breakthrough!

When Zooming-In the 10.7 Zoom on the S9600 is great (no more walking half a mile to get closer to your shot) & the camera also has a wider than normal wide angle for Zooming-Out (again, you don't have to back up 20 paces to get everyone into the shot). You can even add voice-memos to your pictures (great for adding location info etc...). The camera has lots of different modes including Natural Light Mode for Portriat Photography, Picture Stabalization Mode for Low-Light/Slow-Shutter Photography & Auto Mode to name but a few. The camera will be as fully automatic or as fully manual as you want it to be (after all, you're the boss!). This means that Seasoned Pro's, Keen Amatures & Complete Novices will be comfortable with the camera after just a few shots. The Fujifilm S9600 is the digital camera to get if you're serious about your photography.

could not pay for this item through ebay paypal, could not find help from ebay to pay through paypal which i found very poor on ebay. I ended up sending a cheque which the company were fine with.

After purchasing I started finding bad reviews about this camera and was quite worried.

Camera turned up a few weeks later, batteries thrown in in excitement, turned on and snapped away. It is so easy to use with out reading the manual. I have now read the manual and its just as easy. Turn on and snap away. The full test will be brothers wedding day.

If you havent much experience with cameras this would be a camera i would say purchase and learn from. My 10 year old daughter is happy to use and learn from it.

  A brilliant camera from Fuji
Review created: 09/05/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is my second Fuji digital camera - the first being the S5000.

I've been so impressed with Fuji, that I couldn't go elsewhere. I wanted to upgrade my camera, and the Fuji S9600 was within my budget - it is a superb camera. I'm glad I stuck with what I know about Fuji.

The S9600 is simple to use as a point and shoot camera, or for the more adept, you can have full manual control. The lack of a motorised zoom isn't a backwards step - it's a step in the right direction. You have amazing control and accuracy with the huge 10x (manual) optical zoom.

Overall, this camera gets 10/10 from me. Should I upgrade in the future (it'll be a long time!) Fuji will again be my first port of call.

Should you buy the Fuji S9600?
My advice is.. YES.

  A good all-rounder
Review created: 06/05/08

First, the good:

I like the overall design of the Fuji - I used to use one of the earlier versions, and when my old camera was stolen I was delighted to upgrade. It's got hardly any shutter lag, accepts CF memory (now very cheap) and has a helluva lens. It also has a real rarity in digital cameras - a traditional cable release socket. It feels like a proper SLR in your hand, and the nifty fold-out rear display lets you compose at all sorts of funny angles (unlike all but a few DSLRs). It has a decent weight, so doesn't feel like a toy, and accepts a range of 'proper' 58mm filters, plus several add-on lenses too. Oh, and movie mode is perfectly adequate too (640 by 480) for casual filming. Battery life is fine if you use NiMhs with a decent kick, but don't bother with anything else. The Fuji is easy to use as a point-and-shoot, but has a whole range of 'real' camera settings if you are happy to stretch yourself.

I use a Nikon D70 as well as the Fuji - but I won't take my Nikon gear out in the rain (I live in Scotland, so rain is, er, not unusual!), and would never dream of leaving it in the car on the off-chance. Nor would I carry my Nikon about in crowds, or anywhere it might be a burden (remember all the lenses!). The Fuji is, simply, my portable camera of choice.

And the bad:

The images can be a bit noisy, particularly at the highest ISO settings - they are also clearly inferior to the D70 if you create enormous prints, with some colour fringing at the edges (especially at the extremes of the zoom lens). On normal print sizes you will be pushed to spot much difference, but from time to time I have large poster prints made and then you can easily spot the Fuji images. But, let's be reasonable here - few people do that sort of thing, and you have to be a bit obsessive to notice even if you do!

The autofocus uses bright green dots of light in a strange pattern which can be a bit off-putting for your subject, and sometimes fails entirely in really low light levels.

So, as a luggable alternative to a DSLR it is a great camera. It's far from being a pocket camera (unless you have unusually big pockets). If you can buy it for a decent price on eBay then you're onto a winner!

_____________________________________________________________________

Geeks only:

The Fuji can be converted into an IR/UV camera by removing the internal filter in front of the CCD. It's probably something you won't want to do yourself, but there are companies out there (check out eBay!) who will do it for you. A broadband camera opens up all sorts of interesting possibilities, and can be returned to it's original state by simply adding back the appropriate IR and UV filters to the front of the camera. I've not done it to mine - yet!

Fantastic Camera, worth the money, takes excellent pictures, and is easy to use,
I would recommend it to anybody.
Slight moan, uses 4 x AA Batteries, and you only get about 100 shots on a set, so you must buy rechargables and a recharger, otherwise it will be expensive on batteries.
But an excellent Fuji product.

An excellent bridge camera, that does away with the need to carry different lenses. I have the Raynox 1.5 convertor which can increase the focal length if necessary. My only gripe is the menu system - I like to switch between taking jpg's and Raw photos, and would prefer to be able to find that setting quicker!

This one is ideal for me and I am really happy using it.

I had already bought a Minolta A1 digital 'bridge' camera but wanted greater definition and optical zoom. Having read various reviews I decided to bid for Fuji Finepix S9600 Digital Cameras. I am very pleased with my purchase as it has proved very easy to use with a clear, easily understood manual. I have taken some very pleasing pictures on a recent trip to Costa Rica, and the manual zoom proved effective in framing many wild life subjects. I found the lack of an anti-shake feature disappointing especially when shooting from a small moving boat in rather dim light. Apart from that, the camera is excellent and having bid for, and purchased a separate Cobra auto flash unit, I feel able to tackle a wider range of subjects in the future.

The Free iPhone Guide

To get yourself a free iPhone all you have to do is follow the 3 easy steps:

Step 1 : Sign up for a free iPhone
Sign up at the link below to get your free iPhone. We recommend this free iPhone site because it's been TRIED and TESTED to work.

http://kudosnetwork.co.uk/?ref=174 (copy and paste into browser)

You can choose other prizes like free consoles from this site too! Make sure you use a real email address. Use your real details when you sign up so that the company knows where to send your iPhone! Remember that they have been proven legitimate, so will send you your free iPhone if you do everything legitimately!

Step 2 : Try an advertiser's offer
Basically all you need to do in this step is complete one of the offers, this is where the freebie site make their money, if you complete an offer then the freebie site will recieve commission for it. So if you complete Coral which will only cost you £5 to complete, the freebie site gets £25 from Coral. The two best offers are Lovefilm Free DVD rental (rent two DVD's, keep them for about 2 days, send them back and then cancel the trial) and Coral (bet £5 on a sport). I would reccommend you do Coral as it credits in an hour and is really simple to do, Lovefilm however can become complicated and takes up to 2 weeks to credit! You can also try one of the other offers, most are gambling offers. Don't skip this step! You must complete this step to get your free iPhone!

Step 3 : Refer some friends
This part is a lot easier than it seems, especially now with free iPhone sites getting so popular. There's lots of people online who want a free iPhone too, so start referring them! You only need to get a few signups before you'll be finished. You can ask your friends or your online buddies. I already got a free PS3, Wii, and XBOX Elite without even having to ask my friends for help - there's lots of people online who want a free iPhone like you! One of the easiest ways to get a referral is to do a favour for a friend and ask them to sign up in return. That way, you both can get a free iPhone!

Basic rules
Don't break these rules! This is the only reason that you won't get your free iPhone, so make sure you follow these rules!

- One account per household - don't use a public computer to sign up!
- Use real information - this is a proven legitimate site and they will not give out your information.
- Only complete each offer once! You cannot complete the same offer again, even for different freebies.
- Don't try to cheat the system. This site has been proven legitimate, and they will catch you if you try to cheat. If you do everything legitimately, by following this guide, you will get a free iPhone!

Thats all, just follow my guide and you will have your free iPhone in no time.

Thank you.

Probably the best "bridge camera" at present
Review created: 05/10/07
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The Fujifilm Finepix S9600 falls into the category of Bridge Camera, a sort of bridge between a point and shoot and a full blown SLR with interchangeable lenses.

I use the Fujifilm S5 Pro SLR and wanted a camera that could be a) a backup camera for me when doing wedding photography just in case I had an equipment failure with the S5 Pro and b) a decent camera for my wife, who had an older Fjui point and shoot and a 35mm film camera. I looked long and hard around the market and had a good hands on play with a few cameras in shops and at exhibitions I chose the Fujifilm Finepix S9600 (known as the S9100 in the USA). The camera has several advantages over an SLR for the kind of travel photography that my wife normally does as it has a great zoom range built in. As the lens is not interchangeable, there is no chance of dust entering the body when changing lenses, something that I am always paranoid about!

It can be used in anything from point and shoot, through a good selection of scene modes to full manual if you wish, also with continuous, single shot or manual focus. The camera is very good and out of out holiday photos from a recent trip to Canada, it really is impossible to tell which photos were taken on the S9600 at £250 and which were taken on the S5 Pro which with lens cost £1300 unless you look REALLY closely with a critical eye!

There are only 2 things that I don't like about the camera and they are as follows:-

1) I would much rather have had an optical viewfinder rather than the electronic one, but appreciate that this would have increased the cost significantly

2) The hot shoe only supports a standard single contact flash, so for flash photos (except when using the low power internal flash) you need to rely on either the flashgun getting the exposure correct in auto mode or use it in full manual mode and do things the hard way. With a decent flashgun such as a Metz, you do get good shots though as long as you take a little care.

We're off on holiday again soon and I have to admit that I very am tempted to buy another S9600 for myself instead of taking the SLR, lenses, etc with me as I know that I will have little chance of prising the S9600 out of my wife's hands to use if we only took hers with us!

I am going to America in December and wanted a camera with much more optical zoom than what my previous camera had. The S9600 offers fantastic zoom with it's 10.7 optical and 2.0 digital zooms. I have been able to take clear pictures of buildings that are at least three to four miles away from me. This camera offers many funtions including anti-shake, night and an excellent movie funtion, where you can zoom in and out whilst recording, which my other camera did not have. At first, I didn't think that I would be able to get along with this camera due to all the functions, but I soon got the hang of them. This camera is 9 mega pixels and gives great quality pictures and movies.
I highly recommend this camera for all photography fanatics, especially amateurs like me. I cannot wait until I start using this in New York.

Great camera for those willing to learn ...
Review created: 02/08/07

4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

After 4 years of using advanced point-and-shoot cameras I wished to return to the basics of photography. This camera proves to be the perfect tool.
All important controls are just a button away, the camera is responsive and image quality is very good if you know what you are doing. A D-SLR has better image quality but the Fuji's fixed 28-300mm manual zoom lens with a very decent macro makes you think twice about buying a D-SLR at all.
Low light capabilities are excellent. Although there is a fair amount of noise in the image; it is not the usual sensor noise like that from compact cameras. It reminds me of the grain of 3200 iso slide films.
The build-in flash is underpowered and good enough for short distance fill-in flashing. Since the camera has a hotshoe it will accept most third party 'AUTO' flashes (no need for a dedicated and expensive TTL flash).
And if one day the cameras 'dies' in action you can easily go out and buy another one the same day since the price is very reasonable.

Overall this camera is a keeper. Not perfect but the more time you spend with it the more you learn from it or, in my case, re-discover what i learned from the traditional film cameras years ago.

  Finepix S9600 Review
Review created: 09/07/07
by:
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Having decided to upgrade my digital camera I chose the Fuji Finepix S9600 as the best option for features, lense capability and MgPix. Also I wanted a camera that could also be used by my wife when she wanted. So having a simple user interface with a straight forward Automatic option which some easy to use enhancing features like the Macro lense, and apperture adjustments was a must.
So far so good. It has been on holiday with us, survived two kids birthday parties, braved a few cold walks along the South coast and every time delivered clear and consistent colour and exposure.
One thing I was looking for was the response speed between taking the photo and capturing the scene. The Finepix is 100 times better than a normal digital camera but still behind a Digital SLR. This was as expected but I am really pleased how much better this is than my old digital, I can actually take a clear photo of the kids running around.
One thing missing from the box is a case. If you are looking to purchase then pick up the Fuji case to go with as you will only buy one later and might get a better deal purchasing all in!
In summary a light, easy to use, responsive digital camera which performs consistently way above average. In this budget range, I could not fault it.
Enjoy !!
