Franklin SPQ-108

A good entry level speller from Franklin. This model is now a bit dated but still does the job and is good value being the cheapest speller on the market.

For a £ or 2 more you might want to consider the Franklin thesaurus as this will have both spelling and the thesaurus suggestions.

This has a good data base with probably every basic word you will ever need. Also has simple anagram/crossword solver but its only a small bonus and if you need if for crosswords getting a dedicated unit for crossword solving would be better.

Limited but still good for everyday use and being Franklin's entry level unit is relatively cheap too.

My old Franklin pocket speller had given excellent service for a number of years but the lid had broken off some time ago. It then started to loose it,s mind so I was very pleased to find one brand new on ebay for less than the original. A must have for any crossword fan who is not too good at anagrams.

I bought this as I had an earlier model which was great but finally wore out. Sadly this was a pale imitation of the older unit. Its lid is difficult to open and you have to tell it every time you wish to use the dictionary - a small but extremely maddening difference from the older model which, reasonably, assumed you wanted to enter a word to look up unless a function button was pressed. The dictionary itself seemed poorer than my last Franklin/Collins but this is probably because I now use electronic versions of The Oxford Concise and Merriam-Webster's Unabridged dictionaries. The latter, though American, is very good; I have it on my Palm as well as the Franklin version of it.

My verdict. Spend more, get much more - for about £70-£100 you can get the Sharp PWE500A which is British and has a back light amongst other goodies or the Franklin Merriam-Webster's which is slightly tacky but does the buisness superbly.

If you were wondering, yes, I am addicted to dictionaries.

A must have if you are a person who writes letters and need a slight reminder on spelling certain words.

I bought this for my daughter for high school as she isn't a brilliant speller. She has found it a god send it has really helped her. Very easy to use, with lots of features such as, games a calculator. The lid folds down so that you don't have to worry about the buttons getting accidentally pressed when being carried around. My daughter loves the games and has found them to actually help improve her spelling. Her school work has come on a treat. Definitely recommended.
