FORREST GUMP is one of the most unforgettable films I have ever seen. Director Robert Zemeckis marked his place in Hollywood with the hugely popular Back to the Future trilogy. Tom Hanks climbed the ladder of success starring in comedy movies like Splash and Turner and Hooch in the 1980's, but hadn't had critical success until 1993 when he starred in Philadelphia with Denzel Washington, which won him his first Oscar for Best Actor. The movie also features outstanding performances from little known actors Gary Sinise (Apollo 13, Ransom, Deception), Mykelti Williamson (Heat, Con Air, Three Kings, Ali) and Robin Wright-Penn, credited as Robin Wright, (Unbeakable).

FORREST GUMP starts off with the title character (Hanks) sitting on a bench waiting for a bus when a young woman comes and sits next to him. Here he starts his story by remembering his first pair of shoes, which in the film are leg braces. Forrest tells us how he met his life-long friend Jenny (Wright-Penn), how he served in the Vietnam war and how he spent years running for absolutely no reason.

Hanks plays Forrest Gump in a way that makes us feel what the character is feeling so most that we develop a sort of relationship with him. Gary Sinise has an excellent performance as Lt. Dan Taylor who hates Gump because he saved him in Vietnam because he believes that he should of died on the battle field but late becomes his friend, and who says that Sinise can only play bad guys? Robin Wright-Penn handles Jenny's drug addiction and the scene were she tries to commit suicide brilliantly. Mykelti Williamson plays the part of Forrest's friend 'Bubba' Blue, whom he meets in the army, excellently considering that this is the movie where he gets the most screen time that his ever had in the movies that I've ever seen him in. Sally Feild (Mrs Doutfire, Homeward Bound, Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Fansico, Legally Blonde 2:Red White and Blonde) plays the part of Forrest's devoted mother very well. The little boy who in years to come would rise to fame, Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense, Pay it Forward, A.I.), make an appearance as Forrest Gump Jr.. Haley, Mr. Simonet (played by Kevin Spacey in Pay it Forward) would be proud. This was one of the best movie's of 1994, others included Pulp Fiction and Speed.

  Best Film Ever Made

I can honestly say in my opinion that this is the best film ever made, I love it and could watch it over and over again and never get bored with it. This is a Tom Hanks Classic, the slightly slow character he plays is one you will fall in love with. From the start this film is full of emotion I find myself getting chocked up every 10 minutes, I would describe it as magical, a film which has everything, love, romance, comedy, action, happyness, sadness the list goes on. I would recomend this film to anyone

I'd forgotten how touching this movie is. Tom Hanks is absolutely amazing and shows that he is at the very top of his game - it's impossible to imagine any other contemporary doing such a good job. And without Hanks, this movie may well have fallen completely on its feet.

But as it is, the film is simply beautiful, and the attention to detail is astonishing. It starts right in the opening scene, when we follow a feather randomly twisting and turning through a gust of wind to land, as if destiny pre-ordained it, at Forrest's feet. Needless to say, this isn't the last we see of the feather - but the movie is at pains to show that destiny, though vital, is as random and capricious as that gust of wind.

Hanks plays a simpleton (IQ: 75) from the Alabama - Deep South, who by virtue of not having a cynical molecule in his body and having a remarkable resilience and persistence when he puts his little mind to something manages to pull off a whole litany of record-breaking, medal-earning, girl-getting achievements.

The special effects play a backseat role, but effortlessly lift the movie from the bizarre into the extra-ordinary, and let the characters perform superhuman feats in an almost-believable manner.

Forrest Gump - a great character
Review created: 04/11/09

This is a highly enjoyable film, telling the story of a simple guy, Forrest Gump, and his journey in the world as he grows up. His encounters include Elvis, JFK, Watergate, Vietnam, civil rights, etc with images of Gump (Tom Hanks in a well deserved Oscar winning performance) expertly interposed on historical film. But its also a human story of a comradeship with a black man, a paraplegic, a dying girlfriend and a much missed mother. Happy, sad, funny, philosophical, emotional, this film has it all. Highly recommended.

I had already seen Forrest Gump on video, but as often happens it was lent out and never returned, I recalled it as being such a briliantly put together film that I just had to buy it again but this time on DVD.
My money was well spent, it is a film I have watched several times and each time I love it even more, it is comical and sad, filled with fact and distorted fact, Tom Hanks plays the character so well with Forrest's natural naivity taking him inadvertantly to the heights of unrecognised fame and fortune. Sally Field plays his mother to perfection and again the serious comedy is perfection.

Must be one of the best films of all time, (I also bought the book but havent read it yet).
Soon to be out on Blu ray so get the HD version if you can afford it but the price this film goes for on DVD now makes it a no brainer, add it to your collection for a couple of pounds and you will watch it a few times over the years.

A must-see for all humans who wish to increase or reboot their humanity.
Tom Hanks' performance and touching understanding of Gump's predicament is a gift to us all. Had he never acted in another film he would have justified himself in this. Winston Groom (author of the book) must have been satisfied.

Forrest is here to save the day
Review created: 07/06/08

Who or what is Forrest Gump? Is he a simpleton? An idealist? A moral paragon? In this movie it's more appropriate to describe him as what he isn't. Forrest lives in a world that derides him as stupid but, as Mrs Gump says, "stupid is as stupid does", and in this movie it's the other characters who seem endowed with stupidity: Jenny stumbles from one bad trip to another, Lieutant Dan loses his legs, then his mind at war, while everybody else seems to engage in acts of relentless and tragic idiocy. All through this Forrest is the constant: he sees the world in simple terms, intent on doing the right thing. In this movie it's not Forrest that's retarded; it's the rest of the world.

Forrest Gump mentions and addresses many of the crucial American wounds of the 20th century: Vietnam, relationships with African-Americans, drugs, capitalism and the mistreatment of women. Naturally Forrest himself takes the morally upright line on all of these: he fights in Vietnam then rejects war as hell, makes best friends with the African-American Bubba, rejects drugs, becomes a national sporting hero, makes a million without even trying, looks for love with Jenny but loses her despite treating her better than any other man ever did. The interactions and contradictions between Forrest and his more worldly, more cynical castmates is the source of much humor, some of it quite dark. Weaving Forrest into various bits of historical footage was quirky and interesting, though played no significant part in the story.

The acting is strong, the narrative is compelling enough and its semi-documentary style direction is consistent and provides clarity and pace. However Forrest Gump is little more than an ideological fairy story, partly to keep viewers believing in the cause. Would that we could have a world where the best-intentioned half-wit could pop up at opportune moments in history, winning hearts, amassing a fortune, becoming famous. Sadly, the world generally belongs to those who have screwed over someone else to get there - and that isn't Forrest, he's too nice a guy.
