The fast-cutting brutal footage, mixed with the slow-paced emotional scenes, makes the controversial film a fascinating account of hooliganism. The story is based more on loyalty, male culture and bitterness towards how their country has failed them, rather than encouraging people to copy their actions, or see them as a ‘hero’.With a former hooligan refusing to return to fighting, and a few characters frowning upon their conduct, the violent behaviour of the football hooligans is never condoned or glamorised. The powerful film shows that the beautiful game rears a truly ugly side, which is bound to shock and stun audiences, and will undoubtedly bring English hooliganism back to the headlines - but for the wrong reasons. Thanks for reading

Nick Love's provocative film risks accusations of exploitation and, more significantly, being out of date. John King's acclaimed 1996 novel skewered a particular brand of male idiocy: blokes fuelled by booze, drugs, tribal bravado and a desire to batter each other senseless. The uniform of jeans, white trainers and Burberry caps, and the profanity - every sentence using a variation of 'fack', 'fackinell', 'fackinitim', etc - still ring true, but the social context today seems more generally relevant to city centres around closing time than specifically to outside football grounds

A great film!
Maybe not better than Greenstreet but definately not worse!
It has a better story line than Greenstreet but the fighting isn't as good as Greenstreet!
Still an excellent film though!
Great characters!
Funny at times!
And an excellent final fight!
A must see for any football fan/hooligan!
9/10
Dan.

  Football Factory (DVD 2004)

Published in 1996, John King’s novel Football Factory was a gripping insight into the mind of a 1980s football hooligan. Deranged but believable, it raised issues of class, race, tribal allegiance and the masculine capacity for violence. Eight years on, the Taylor Report and tighter policing have altered the ugly face of the beautiful game, so while the violence still exists, updating King’s narrative to the present day without any kind of contextual scene-setting leaves Football Factory looking and sounding anachronistic. The Burberry and trainers uniform haven’t changed and neither have the ‘fackin’ carnts’ wearing them. But there’s something almost quaint about the fights here, an insidious nostalgia for the kind of mob clashes settled away from the stadiums nowadays.

Narrator Tommy Johnson (Danny Dyer) is part of the infamous real-life Chelsea firm, the Headhunters. With best friend Bob (Neil Maskell), guv'nor Harris (Anthony Denham), teenage pikey Zeberdee (Roland Manookian) and a supporting cast of assorted scum, he lives for away days to rival firms like Cardiff, West Ham and Millwall. Especially Millwall. His mentor in psychosis is the ironically named Billy Bright (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ Frank Harper), and to Tommy, it’s all one big adrenaline rush. In a whirl of drugs, shagging and casual violence, there’s barely a football kicked, and his lifestyle is contrasted with that of his granddad (Dudley Sutton), railing at the selfishness of the younger generation. But cocky though he is, Tommy is mentally unravelling and has premonitions of a savage beating at the forthcoming cup-tie at Millwall.

Any hooligan drama will suffer comparisons to Alan Clarke’s gritty The Firm and Philip Davis’ ID, but director Nick Love’s choice of Trainspotting-style flash makes Football Factory seem distinctly lightweight and infatuated with its subjects. A self-aware narrator backed by a pumping Brit soundtrack now seem rather hackneyed, and Tommy’s choosing of life kicking life seems less like a defiance of society than a failure by the filmmakers to engineer a more satisfying ending. There’s endless macho posturing, particularly from Harper, to the point of tedium, slowing the narrative down when a scene has long outstayed its welcome. The yobs rarely rise above caricature and the device of Tommy’s wartime hero gramps is as half-arsed a social critique as any committed to celluloid.

Overall, this film is amazing, DONT MISS OUT!!

Darkly funny, superbly acted and casted, compelling, troubling and an alltogether compelling view! If you have ever had any feelings towards what drives someone to be a footy hooligan, watch this film. Miles more 'British' in my opinion than Green Street.

  Football Factory
Review created: 02/09/09

The Football Factory tells the story of Tommy Johnson (played by Danny Dyer), a twenty-something Chelsea supporter who admits in his opening Trainspotting-esque diatribe that he “lives for the weekend, casual sex, watered-down lager, heavily cut drugs and occasionally kicking f*** out of someone”. He is the member of the Chelsea firm that travels to games home and away to fight the opposition firms.
When he gets involved with the sister of a supporter of Chelsea rivals Millwall, it sparks off a chain of events that leads to a showdown with the Millwall fans via psychedelic dreams of impending doom for Tommy and one of his gang-mates and plenty of cockney-geezer posturing. It’s clear from the beginning that the characters on show are not the most sympathetic characters, although they do have a surprisingly wide vocabulary due to the liberal use of rhyming slang, which alone provides rewards for repeat viewings just so you can work out what they’re all talking about.
We are immediately thrown into a ten minute opening montage of genuine archive footage of riots and an introduction to the main characters then taken on Tommy’s journey, which takes in the relationship with his granddad who fought in World War II and frowns upon all the modern day firms who operate with military precision but don’t actually have anything to fight for other than the buzz of beating up groups of strangers. Tommy has premonitions of being badly beaten by the Millwall firm and has visions of a member of his firm who comes to a sticky end.
The final minutes go against the morals that Tommy is being taught by his dreams and it left a bitter taste in my mouth but this is probably because of my feelings towards hooliganism rather than a problem with the way the film is structured. Ultimately, Tommy’s character does not develop and the answer to the question he sets himself at the beginning ( “Was it all worth it?”) is a resounding yes. The final scene appears to give the message that it’s OK to hang around in gangs, take class-A drugs, value designer gear more than women and batter your peers every Saturday afternoon as long as you don’t steal or deal drugs. While this isn’t a philosophy that everyone should live their life by, it is an original ending and reminds us that these characters aren’t meant to develop: like Frank Harper’s character Billy, they will be this way until they’re eventually sent to prison or killed.
Be under no illusion: this film has very little to do with football. Films telling the tale of football hooligans before (e.g. I.D.) and since (e.g. Green Street) have presented the characters as knowledgeable fans of the clubs their firms have allegiances with. In those films, we see them at the games cheering on their teams and goading the rival fans at the other end of the stadium. The Football Factory is different. As director Nick Love states on the commentary, it was intended for the film to be “a celebration of male culture”. Seeing as a love of football is a given for the young British male, what else is there? Well, teaming up with a bunch of mates and beating the hell out of a bunch of supporters of another football club is a common pastime if this film is to be believed.

  Football Factory - Lads Film
Review created: 05/08/09

This is a gritty and violent film perfect for young British lads. It deals with the trials and tribulations of a Chelsea supporter obsessed with football violence but with doubts about one particular meet against Millwall. It is a refreshing mixture of comedy and graphic violence, a winning combination I think you'll agree.

The Football Factory DVD - Gritty and Shocking
Review created: 21/07/09

The Football Factory
Not normally the kind of DVD I would usually consider watching, but following a recommendation from my little bro, I did,

Crumbs, from the outset it is shocking, gritty and actually very believable, which within itself is alarming. A modern look at the violence and gang warfare surrounding football, drugs and Saturday Nights, this film was gripping intense, and to be honest had me unable to stop watching as it descended into chaos.

A very compelling DVD which was thought provoking, and showed how easy it is to get caught up in the middle of something which most people find taboo.

Happy to recommend (but wouldn't watch it with anyone sensitive to swearing and violence - shocking, gritty and strangely compelling, with characters you will love to loathe

Suz xx

  A great Football Film!
Review created: 09/06/09

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this film when the opening credits rolled, but after a few minutes I was hooked. To me it came across very true to life and I can imagine that this 'firm' mentality with regards to football gangs still goes on in some respects, if not as hard core nowadays as this film portrays. It was a real eye opener. Violent in some places, but then you could not have made a film like this without these scenes. Danny Dyer truly makes the film - he is such a cheeky chappy. It really drives home how passionate, men in particular are to their football teams, although, of course, by all accounts some 'fans' take it a bit too far...definitely worth watching without a doubt! 5 out of 5 no question!

This film is a bit of a inbetweener. Like marmite, you either hate it or you love it. In my case i love it, showing football violence as how it used to be proving that nowadays all that has disappered and there is just a bit of banter here and there. Danny Dyer is a fantastic actor and plays his character excellent.
