A limp, trite and instantly-forgetable storyline, a cast of unimpressive and ill-differentiated characters, and action scenes generated by a computer. Yawn. Do yourself a favour and watch "The Blue Max" instead: that one comes from a time when Hollywood believed in actual cinematographic values.

Oh, yes, and if you're one of those people mainly interested in "historical accuracy" (I'm not, but I know plenty who are) then the thing that will probably annoy the pants off you is the grafting of 21st century manners onto world war one figures. You might as well be listening to dialogue and body language designed for a Milwaukee shopping mall in 2009. "Shall we like go over the lines and like beat up a few Huns wiv our machine guns, just for a laugh, know what I mean?" Well, not quite, but you get the drift ..

  just great

great servicewas thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of

A good old ripping yarn. The plot is a bit thin but the flying sequences are exciting enough. Kept my lad thrilled and inspired him to learn more about WW1.

  Solid WW1 Action

This is a very very very cheesy film! You have everything....the love interest...the bad guy (who you do actually hate by the end)....the token black dude.....the misunderstood veteran etc. Sorry if i've missed any categories out but thats the general gist. An easy watching movie for a sunday evening with some good action sequences and a plot you can follow without any thought involved. It's typically american in nature but don't let that stop you. Overall i'd say it was worth the £2 i paid for it and was better than half the rubbish in the cinemas at the moment!!

My general impression of the film was way too much ground time but delighted to see some fokker action when it came. nicely done flighing scenes perhaps could have done with some realy extended takes but missed its chance to take you on that roller coaster . Big gripe with the music .same old generic American scenery score for every scene really distracts from the story . It could of had French concertina stuff here and more russian flavours for the airbattles. My other and biggest gripe was the enemy aircraft were all of the same type with matching paint schemes when after watching the` blue max you know wasn`t the case. On a plus the lead actor was a ringer for Jimmy Dean and was wholey convincing as were the rest of the cast.

Flyboys crash and burn or flying high
Review created: 15/09/08

Never new this film existed until looking on play did a little research and this film appealed to me, i like war films adventure action and this film provided it all although there is some large gaps in the action filled up with character building and sub plots one of which is love, this can be forgiven as the flight sequences are superb the dogfights are amazing infact anything to do with the cg in this movie is superb certainly worth a fiver overall i think this is a good film but if your not into war films and aerial dogfights this films not for you.

I saw this movie first of all on Sky Premiere Movies and only watched it for the James Franco factor. Only after watching it i saw the other actors were also amazing as are the special effects and scenes of the planes flying. I would reccommend this film to everyone but especiallt for fans of Franco as he is brilliant in it. x

Flyboys DVD "missed at the cinema, caught on DVD"
Review created: 23/06/08
by:

Wanted to watch this on the big screen but missed the plane, so to speak.

Here's the techy bit:
The DVD was upscaled through a PS3 console for a 50" 1080p plasma set, audio processed with Dolby Digital using an active sub-woofer.

Pre-conceptions were of a limited effects budget and a corny america-orientated storyline, one-up from "straight to tv" fodder.

The reality was a very watchable film, endearing characters with a progressive screenplay supported by good quality cgi and live-action sequences.
Someone did their homework on this movie and it shows.

At the beginning I "briefed" my fellow audience on the realities of WWI aerial combat and as the film progressed these were given image right through to the final act. These were courageous men from harder times.

The lioness mascot was borderline faux-license, but check the factual squadron photo shown at the end, she's there!

This film on dvd is easy to recommended for tv viewing based on the strong storyline and great characters. With home cinema it's second to none, surpassing Aces High.

There were plenty of copies on ebay, so go bag yourself some aerial combat and join the ranks in the flyboys mess.
Cheers!

  FLYBOYS
Review created: 24/04/08

This is a good film but, as usual with American films, they take over everything and would appear to be the only Allied side to do any real fighting in the war.

Overall it is a good story which has some very good effects and would even appeal to women as it does have the obligatory love interest. There are better war films out there but this one is still watchable on a bleak Sunday afternoon.

  DVD Film "Flyboys"
Review created: 05/12/07

For anyone interested in flying, and looking for a good solid story, this is a must. The action sequences were spot-on, and the general cameraderie was excellent. Mixing five different characters in one story is very well done, and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. I cannot fault this film.
