I bought this film because of all the hype surrounding it. You know the kind, "great movie" "excellent special effects" "superb acting" "british at its best"
and because of the interest in how London and the government would deal with such a major crisis.

I was extremely dissapointed with the entire thing. Over acted (to say the least) poor story line, not enough special effects. I even watched it with my surround sound system almost maxed out and I was still dissapointed.

It starts out planting the seed that Robert carlisle and his father no longer get on (for one reason or another)but they all work together with the Thames barrier so have to see eachother. This dreary relationship is show to go from strength to strength in the film until the very last when....well, its so predictable, Im guessing that you can guess whats coming but i'll say no more.
After all, i wouldn want to spoil it for you *YAWN*

There is one scene that is soooooo unbelievable its laughable. Two people (one of which is robert carlisle) jumping into the river Thames (remember now, this is a combined hurricane with high tide...lol) managing to stay together for most of it (they do lose eachother once but low and behold, they soon manage to SOME HOW meet up again umongst the hurricaned waters)and survive unscathed. Theyre not even emotional about it when they eventually get onto dry land.

It ends in supposed glory, thats if you can get that far without falling asleep or switching it off.

Its got to be one of the worst british efforts of film making ive seen in a long long time.

have just watched this DVD and thought it was a good film; actually a lot better in my opinion than 28 Weeks Later which I soon got bored with. I thought the film was very believeable - a lot of people obviously disagree with me though. A couple of the characters were a little wooden but I thought Robert Carlyle was excellent as always and also Joanne Whalley. My husband and I thought it was quite a scary film.

Overall very enjoyable.

  FLOOD -A British Disaster ?
Review created: 17/04/09

Well OK the only reason I bought it was because Joanne Whalley was in it.I didn't see it on TV the first time round but had seen some clips of it on the Net none of which had impressed me and worst of all had read that Joanne Whalley's performance was wooden !
The basic gist is that an unprecedented storm hits Scotland with unpredictable ferocity and heads down the East Coast to terrorise London and the Infamous Thames Barrier. The Prime Minister is out of the Country leaving his Deputy (David Suchet) in charge - you get an idea of how competent the politicians are going to be when he (Suchet) turns up in Scotland wearing just a suit in the middle of the devastation - no Mac or overcoat not even an umbrella in sight. The story focuses then solely on the Thames Barrier and the characters involved in its control and maintenance. The Contracting Engineer (Robert Carlyle) & his estranged wife (Jessica Gilsig- not heard of her before I saw this film but she seems to take 2nd billing behind Carlyle ,probably because the big named actors didn't want to be recognised?) they provide the romantic? interest - well they could have -not enough effort from the script writers to provide any romance I'm afraid.Oddly enough "Carlyle's" estranged father (Tom Courtney) is the Professor who did the Report on the Barrier's effectiveness - or lack of it - is also called in to aid the Politicians (the Nepotism rankled me frankly) We also have the Armed Forces in the Command Centre but Luckily the whole thing is co-ordinated and run by Commander Nash (Joanne Whalley) of the Metropolitan Police Force.Putting aside that in real life the Police couldn't organise a beer festival in a brewery FOR ME, Nash (Jo Whalley) gelled the whole disjointed thing together her calm but decisive performance grounded the indecision and panic around her.Her quiet unassuming voice gave perfect diction and I found it an absolute pleasure every time she was on screen, her own missing daughters brought sufficient croak in her voice to give empathy to her character without breaking the rigid control you would expect a senior police officer to exert in these circumstances. With a cast of headliners such as Suchet & Courtney I felt disappointed that the scriptwriters didn't make enough of their characters (AND ACTING ABILITY!)
When the film begins the graphics were not convincing enough for me - although when they used real footage I was enthralled, the CGI was just too grey & dull ! The Director chose to shake the camera about a lot to presumably give the impression of strong winds etc. but this effect didn't enhance the visuals for me ,the same shaky style was used in crowd scenes and again I found it a turn off - it was almost as if the camera was being used as a tool for bad acting/cgi etc - it just didn't work.In reality the film was too short to fit everything in, it lacked human depth and for me the only bit of humanity was shown by the two workers in the underground who encounter the roof leaking and realise something is wrong - we follow their story for a while until they meet up with Engineer (Carlyle) I enjoyed that bit.So apart from not having enough romance/human depth, the shaky camera work and average CGI this wasn't a bad film I was delighted with Joanne Whalley- still stunning at 40+ and have to admit shedding ONE tear at the end when the survivors emerge I'll give the film 3/5 and Joanne Whalley 10/10 !!

Not a bad film, I was very surprised. Mos of the reviews come up with a negative point of view. But for a British film, I think it was a good family film. It held my interest and it was very realistic, it could happen. So I would say if you like this type of film give it a good you might be surprised.

I read the reviews from the film critics, which weren't very good to say the least. I was ummimr and arging as to whether to get it or not then I read the reviews on here and decided to give it a go. The film is really quite good. Buy it, watch it... you might actually like it.

Flood - London Tidal Wave - Disaster Movie
Review created: 31/12/07
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The DVD was a Christmas Pressie.
It is set in London and follows the unpredictable events leadings upto a massive tidal wave surging up the Thames flooding central London.

The story starts at the Thames Barrier where the Engineer (Robert Carlyle) and his Ex work. The weather in Scotland (Wick and Arbroth) has caused concern in London but no one raises the barrier.... Meanwhile his estranged Father realises that the Met office have missed a key bit of information. That the High Tide plus the rainfall from the storm would generate to much volume of water for the Thames Barrier to cope....

Too late to stop nature the storm hits and with some excellent stunts and Digital editing first East London, Canary Wharf and the City come under water. Meanwhile the story continues from the Barrier to the Underground which have not been evacuated... The plot has a few twists and turns, pervesely to save London they have to convince the Prime Minister's deputy (David Suchet) to sanction the opening of all the sleuse gates along the Thames to counter the surge and synchronise this with re opening the barrier at Woolwich to "flush" the flood out.

Good story set in London (unlike most disaster movies set in the US) this film is worth a watch.

"It's coming straight for us"

As the biggest storm in history batters the eastern coast of Scotland, Keith Hoskins (Planner) and the MET Office team predict that the storm will move into the North Sea but it turns back towards the south east coast and onwards to London. Professor Leonard Morrison (Courtenay) calculates that the storm will hit at high tide, pushing a surge of water towards London and one that the Tidal Barrier will not manage to storm. As London braces itself for the storm to hit, Scotland Yard commissionaire Patricia Nash (Whalley) has to comprehend the possibility of having to evacuate two million people before the tidal floodwaters hit.

Disaster movies have been the stalwart of the film industry with Hollywood using all that nature has to offer to destroy major cities throughout the world but this time London is the target and the floodwater is coming.

When a British disaster movie about the flooding of London after one of the worst storms in living memory was proposed this must have seems like a great idea and one that could have made a huge profit at the box office. Even though the UK has never really been the main emphasis of a film of this kind, the timing of this movie couldn't have been any worst. With a 2007 summer release planned, the UK was hit by one of the worst storms in living memory and cities like Hull, Sheffield and some of the South Coast were devastated by crippling floods. With real people facing real disaster problems, escaping into a movie that shows the same thing probably wasn't what the public would like to see but if the filmmakers could make a movie that dramatised an event like this with great care and real human drama, then it may be a success but unfortunately 'Flood' is a disaster.

After the success 'The Day after Tomorrow', the environmental disaster movie was bound to have a few films trying to capture box office enthusiasm shown to that film but this is not always a good thing. A disaster movie set in the British capital might have sounded like a good idea and the advent of computer generated visual effects means that any major city can be devastated but without a story to give you a reason to care then the film is a complete disaster.

The premise of a tidal surge of unprecedented power and size heading up the Thames River, one that the Tidal Barrier couldn't handle, is promising but while the scenes of disaster and devastation are handled extremely well, it is the human story that is lacking and even B-Movie in standard. With a good ensemble cast that includes Robert Carlyle, Jessalyn Gilsig, Tom Courtenay, Joanne Whalley and David Suchet, you would expect a lot better but the performances and the story itself is laughingly bad. Trying to put a human element into the scenes of disaster is all well and good but you have to write something that is believeable but these scenes in 'Flood' are just awful.

While the visual effects are impressive the human scenes are awful and make 'Flood' almost laughably bad in most of the key scenes. This isn't a disaster movie it is a disaster of a movie.

Having watched "The Day After Tomorrow" and enjoyed it I thought I would by a similar "disaster" movie but based on home soil. Was not disappointed but from the other settee there was constant criticism from an Environment Agency employee like "that wouldn't happen"....."oh look, they've filmed it as the barrier being up when it's actually down, look look at the arms..." irrespective, my daugher and I thoroughly enjoyed the film and it does portray what could happen in years to come with global warming etc. Very easy to follow, good drama scenes etc, well worth a look

Some brilliant special effects and a few really dodgy ones as well...acting great but we just didnt seem to care if anyone lived or died as we just didnt get to know anyone. For a so called Brit flick is was good...but it isnt our answer to The Day after Tomorrow..Jonathan Hunt

This is clearly the British version of "The Day after Tomorrow", having said that it is still very watchable, the special effects are pretty good as well, it has a good story line and with Robert Carlyle taking the lead and Jessica Gilsig as the female lead it seemed to move along quite well, it was also nice to see Tom Courtney and Joanne Whalley-Kilmer taking a part as well.
All in all a good watch.

not a bad film, passed a couple of hours, i would say it was watchable, but if you are the type of person that shouts at the tv, then you will be doing it all the way through the film, some of the acting is really bad, but its worth watching.

A reasonably solid effort to produce a script following the apocolyptic nature of such films as "The Day after Tomorrow" and alike. A good amount of supspense and the competent David Suchet make this a Brit outing that holds its own and although not big budget the SFX manage to hold their own.
