Although the action scenes were CGI/ok-ish, usual Eastwood drag to the storyline in back and forward continuity. Could have made a great movie with Flags, but too maudlin and patriotic for European taste. Appreciating the hammering the USMC took out in the Pacific, and lets face it, the USA did win WW2 for all of us, on balance only an average movie,
Saving Private Ryan it ain't.
However, Letters from Iwo Jima was oh so much more than Flags. The characters not so "Hollywood", quite touching scenes showing the futility of it all for the lowly footsoldier that transfers over to all nationalities. Much better.

Clint Eastwood revisits familiar territory with LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA, a companion piece to his critically-acclaimed World War II drama FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS. Where the two films differ is in their version of events; FLAGS_ is told from a predominantly American point-of-view, whereas LETTERS_ offers the Japanese perspective. This set contains both films

Two seperate films of the battle for Iowa Jim during the World War II. The first, Flags of our Fathers tells of the historic photo that overtook the USA with a sense of victory whilst some quarters used it for propoganda to signal how ell the battle went. It focusses on the battle at Iowa Jima, a volcanic island in the Pacific from the American side and then switches to the marines who were paraded through many cities in the US as those who were in that historic photo. Can they handle all that publicity?

The second film, Letters from Iowa Jima tells the story from the Japanese side with subtitles. This film was an eye opener from start to finish and goes a long way to explaining how in some ways, the Japanese ideology of dying for the Emperor irrespective of lives being lost and being able to defend an Island effectively for a longer period, was perhaps one important reason why they lost their war against the USA.

In my view, Letters from Iowa Jima was the better film of the two but both are watchable and perhaps historically accurate to a large degree.

  Clint Eastwood double masterpiece

Exposes the extreme stupidity and personal exploitation of WAR.
How ordinary people are duped into violence by idiotic, political
power-struggles - the lessons are never learned.

Flags of our fathers/letters from iwo jima

Fantastic , true masterpiece and cleverly done to give the viewer the opportunity to see from both sides an episode from history .
Preferred the japanese side of the story as i felt it was more absorbing and also gave one a feeling of how awful and pointless war is .
Also i found out a lot of information i was unaware of during both and it also indicated once more that common people are the tools of beurocrats and once the use is over you return to obscurity { message from flags of our fathers ]and in the second that duty overrides common sense in some so that they seem blinded to the fact they were being used for others gain .
Other than that both movies were classy , well acted , well filmed and good old fashioned war movies .

  Worth a look
Review created: 04/07/08

I think I preferred the 2nd part of the films from the Japanese perspective. This may have been because of my fascination with there culture, but it is also more action packed and set during the battle as apposed to after it.
It stand out for its unique look at both sides of the battle...there are simply no good or bad guys in war!

Rented the film "Letters from Iwo Jima" whilst on holiday but couldn't watch it because of poor television. Saw this double Dvd and thought that it would be a great pair. My only disappointment was that I didn't know that it was in English sub-titles.

Excellent viewing and to see this epic battl from both sides is imaginative and also inventive. [ Flags of your fathers is the American story & letters from iowa jima is the Japanese side of the story] it is an absolute joy and you just wont want to avert your eyes away for a minute. I have to admit i thought the Japanese story was the best out of the two.
