Fischer-Z - Highlights 1979-2004 (The Best Of 25 Years) (CD 2005)

John Watts is among the greatest of unnkown songwriters. I say unknown except to aficionados. Take a good slice of Ray Davies and the quikiness of Pete Townshend abd the introspective lyrics of Steve Harley, and you will see Jon Watts. he is a talented writer- the force behind Fischer Z, who have enjoyed success abroad, but it has eluded them in England.

This thoughtful compilation of 25 years of Watts' songs includes one from his first album, 'Word Salad', called 'The worker', which has the odd reputation of falling down the charts after it appeared on the the prestigious 'Top of the Pops'.

The band did not score many singles' successes, but many will remember the outstanding track 'So Long'. Many songs make a comment of social situations, wth clever lyrics and excellent observation. There are memorable melodies to go with noticeably thoughtful lyrics.

Watts has an intellectusl honesty and his songs reflect on the foibles of relationships and the folly of war and its attendant slaughter.

There are selections from fourteen albums from 1979 to 2004. they are accompanied by some informative and revealing album notes.
