Fantasic, Wonderful and Utterly Hilarious Series!

Firefly is a wonderful series, which was unfairly cancelled after only 11 episodes. It's a funny, witty look at a future universe - with one major difference: there's no aliens! Imagine a cross between those old John Wayne westerns and a down-and-dirty version of Star Trek (which takes itself much less seriously) - as well as the humour of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Joss Whedon has created a classic!
The characters are perfect - a combination of heroes and innocents, all with their major personality flaws. The captain unusually fought on the losing side of an intergalactic war, and now runs an (occasionally illegal) trading ship, with his former second in command and her toy-dinosaur obsessed pilot husband (the pilot episode contains a scene with said toy dinos which has to go down in history as one of the funniest scenes ever!) Throw in an innocent mechanic, a self-obsessed and completely out-the-game mercenary, a Companion (think geisha) and a few passengers in the form of a religious preacher with a secret and a rich doctor and his crazy on-the-run sister, and you have a receipe not only for disaster, but a wonderful family whose priorigty is simply to survive.
The series bounces between humour ('Our Mrs Reynolds' and 'Shindig') to solemnity ('The Message' and 'Out of Gas') to good old-fashioned adventure ('Heart of Gold') at a breathless pace. There's something for everyone here - and don't be put off by the fact that it's labelled as 'sci-fi', because you don't have to be a sci-fi fan to love this series.
The dvd set contains 14 episodes, including three which were never originally broadcast, as well as various extras including a blooper reel and audio commentaries.
Firefly is one of those series which you will never regret buying, and instead you'll probably end up playing continuously! Its fans are (quite frankly) obsessional (they're known as Browncoats, after Captain Reynolds' coat), and are surprisingly so for a series which has only had 14 episodes (and a movie, Serenity) to date.
One thing of note - if in doubt, you could always head along to one of the charity screenings of Serenity which are happening around June 23rd 2006, all around the world. (See www.cantstoptheserenity.com or www.cantstopthesignal.co.uk for more details.)
The world of Firefly isn't one that you have to be obsessed about to enjoy however - just get the dvds, sit back, and enjoy one of the wildest rides of your life, with the company of a crew you just won't want to let go of!
