Blowing the whistle
What is revealed in some of this wonderful archive footage is that British Railways ended steam with indecent haste - but strongly linked to labour costs.
We are reminded of the huge, labour intensive steam operation, and the multifarious jobs that had to be done to ensure smooth running.
Social rends were altered and unions ensured a better working wage, which the railways could only meet by trimming staff. Going diesel thus helped.
There are revealing glimpses of the train as a major form of transport and a source of pride.
There are also views of filthy engines hanging on until inevitable withdrawal - all photographed by those who have done social history a favour. Commentary is a little self conscious at times, but this is a valuable account of what must have been a sad time for the legions of enthusiasts who now find solace in preserved lines and engines.
