The Real McCoy

This CD is a recording of 3 different shows from the Sumerland tour, at the height of The Nephilim's brief career. You can tell from the opener that this is going to be an atmospheric and emotional experience and the set does not disappoint. The culmination of events with the album closer Dawnrazor is nothing short of euphoric, in a typically dark and gothic fashion, of course! Although it's not fair to just straight out label Fields of the Nephilim as a goth band - they're so much more than that, so much better - it is fair to say that they dominated a niche market of the goth scene back in the late 80's/early 90's. If you've ever seen live footage of the band you should know what I mean.
This album doesn't get my 5 star rating because I have a few problems with the mix, especially the quiet guitar tracks on Moonchild and Last Exit, Carl McCoy's vocals can sometimes be quiet too, but his vocal style is very overt so this doesn't efect the quality of the recording too much.
Compared to other albums of theirs I think Earth Inferno rates as a good best of, but I'd recommend 1988's The Nephilim as their best album. Having said that, Earth Inferno now gets more plays in my house than it does...
