Perhaps the most striking thing about "Fawlty Towers" is that, with so few episodes, it remains irrepressibly funny. No matter how often you watch, even should you become word perfect in the scripts, the action remains hilarious, not to mention outrageous. John Cleese and Connie Booth produced a masterpiece of comedy. Packaged here in three discs, the two series are accompanied by some less than memorable extras - a couple of interviews and a commentary - but, frankly, you don't buy a package like this for the extras, you buy it for the hours and hours of rib-breaking laughter.
"Fawlty Towers" does more than expose the incompetent, amateurish pomposity and rigid morality which seemed to characterise so many English hotels in the 1970's … particularly those of the seaside variety - 'Kiss Me Quick' hats and saucy postcards, but be back in your room by ten, no hanky panky, and breakfast is at eight!

Basil Fawlty runs his hotel the way some people run a private prison. The patrons are there to do as they are told … unless they can prove a certain social cachet. Cleese satirises the 'Englishness' of the seaside hotelier - racism in his treatment of Manuel and middle class consciousness in his treatment of the Irish labourers, the xenophobia and dreams of imperial glory in his attitude to the Germans, the prim outlook on sex, the cloying efforts to move up the ranks and mix with the upper classes while patronising American money, the horror of illness and death, the sheer terror in the face of psychiatry or even bureaucracy.

The ensemble cast are outrageously funny - incisive wit parallels slapstick comedy and farce in the finest traditions of the English stage. "Fawlty Towers", although a television programme, has that sense of live performance, that aura of being performed on stage for your delectation and delight. Perhaps that's what makes it watchable again and again - even in the latest technology of DVD it still appears as a live stage act. The humour remains somehow spontaneous.

But the humour isn't passive, it actively infects your consciousness. You can't pass a leylandii without wanting to uproot it and thrash a small car. You can't open a tin of biscuits without wondering if there will be a rat within. Every time I see a Waldorf salad on a menu, I snigger. Every time I reach round a corner to switch a light on … well, I live in hope.

You'll find all twelve episodes here - "A Touch of Class", "The Builders", "The Wedding Party", "The Hotel Inspectors", "Gourmet Night", "The Germans", "Communication Problems", "The Psychiatrist", "Waldorf Salad", "The Kipper and the Corpse", "The Anniversary", "Basil the Rat". The very titles are cue for laughter. Sound and picture quality are excellent. The quality of the writing and performance is timeless. The only thing wrong with both series appearing in one package is that you are emphatically reminded how few episodes there were. This really is a case of leave 'em wanting more!

  Fawley Towers-British comedy's finest hour

Polly Sybil Manuel and of course Fawlty. Together with the major, the old girls and a host of guest appearances by well known stars. The plausibility of each storyline and the unexpected twists as Fawlty tries to scheme his way out of one fiasco after another, leaves us all in stitches . And a new generation, my toddlers are in hysterics at the antics of Fawlty and Manuel in particular. OK, one or two lines which would not be tolerable today (and quite rightly so) but a masterpiece of a bygone Summery period, the big hair, loud colours, groovy times, yo respect to the Crew, they produced just 12 episodes and called it a day. Leaving us hungering for more. Far better that than it dying a death 10 series later? Well done John Cleese and all your supporting actors/actresses
in whatever you are doing today. You brought joy and laughter to 10s of millions. Now to give that car a damn good trashing!

I have watched Fawlty Towers as a child in poland-trnslated-so I have always wondered what it's like in original. It is as hilarious now as it was 20 years go-no wonder it is such a classic!I would recommend it to anyone to unwind and try to find the old good sense of humour that some of us are loosing with busy lifestyles.Money very well spend indeed!

I bought this to introduce my two older daughters aged 9 and 11 to a series which had had me in stitches in my youth and it has been a joy reliving it with them. They especially enjoy the dysfunctional relationship between Basil and Manuel which they find hilarious. The language is relatively clean by modern standards also.

I love the series and also have the audiobook format. I simply wanted to replace my vhs video's with DVD's, no doubt I will have to replace these DVD's when the big producers decide to change the format again! Still, these were reasonably priced from Ebay and they work perfectly well so I am 100% satisfied with my purchase. I knew exactly what I wanted so chose earliest listing to finish 1st then bid and won.

A timeless classic that continues to make me laugh, time after time. Every home should have one. Just enough episodes. They quit while they were ahead.

This stuff will never age. My kids love this as much as I do, and it's not often you get a belly laugh these days. Modern humour just doesn't cut it as far as I'm concerned, so keep your Ricky Gervase et al - these blokes are just lightweights. Just a pity one has to rely upon 70's humour really - but then I'm probably being nostalgic. Thank God for the DVD.

World class, timeless, often mimiced but never matched.
If this doesn't make you laugh, still after 30 years you'd better check to see if you still have a pulse!

  FAWLTY TOWERS The complete series

Fawlty Towers has got to be one of the funniest sitcoms of all time. This set is every episode made so you can choose your favourite, or like me, sit back and have a bloody good laugh at all 12. This type of comedy is easy to relate to and most people would find it near impossible to watch any of the 12 episodes and keep a straight face. If you`ve never seen Fawlty towers before, theni recomend you buy this complete set, because once you`ve seen one you will want to see the rest!

  PUTTING A WRONG RIGHT!
Review created: 01/02/07

I HAD to buy this product because my 17 year old son, who loves Fawlty Towers, had put the boxed set on his Christmas list and I had purchased a set from a local shop. On Christmas morning, he went to put them on and discovered at this point that what I had actually bought (in error) was the set of Fawlty Towers CD TALKING BOOKS.
I was in big disgrace so as soon as I could, I looked on Ebay to get a boxed set of DVD's for him.
Since the DVD's have arrived, we have enjoyed them immensely. There were no surprises because of course we have seen every episode on the tv but we all-and my son especially-have watched them over and over.

One of the best sitcoms ever made and is very little out of date.

Just goes to show that this will be still a classic 20 years from now!

Hilariously funny, every one a classic.
Some of the humour is quite racist, but in a self efacing way.

Hi. Just to let you know that I bought this item because my drama group performed 3 of the episodes. I therefore bought a set for our Director after the event as a present and then decided to buy myself a set. E bay seemed the best place to do it and we are both happy with the results

Absolute classic comedy. Every episode is as funny as the last. Stands the test of time. The old saying is true 'They don't make them like this any more', unfortunately.

  Fawlty Towers - Complete
Review created: 11/01/09

They made only 12 episodes of this fantastic series.
Each episode was crammed with sharp wit, overlapping incidents, perfect timing and some slapstick (a bit over the top sometimes - in my opinion the only downside in this series).
I heard recently that, whereas other 1/2 hour sit-coms have an average of 120 page script, the average number of pages in Fawlty towers was just over 200.

I even have the book with the complete script, which I can take anywhere and enjoy.
