Fast and The Furious. Vin Diesel

I have no idea who rated Vin Diesel as the next action hero but he will NEVER be that. He is below average at best !!!! However, saying that this film is still very watchable and very enjoyable.

The cars are brilliant and the races are excellent.

Plot -
The Fast and the Furious takes you inside the thrilling world of street racing. Vin Diesel stars as Dominic Toretto, a gang leader who is accused of hijacking trucks and stealing over a million dollars worth of electronic equiptment. The FBI sends LAPD officer Brian O'Conner(Walker) undercover into Los Angeles' street racing circuit to take down Toretto and his team. As O'Conner becomes part of Toretto's life and gets involved with his sister, Mia (Brewster) he tries to prove that Toretto is innocent.

The film that spawned a shed-load of games

This is one of those films that gets panned by the critics but draw me to watch them over and over. Some find it a bit shallow and very "Hollywood". If however you are into the cruising/modifying/street racing scene you will love this.
The basic premise is this:
A few articulated lorries carrying high-value goods have been knocked off by the same gang, driving black honda civic's with green neon lights underneath. The FBI suspect that the culprits are involved in the street-racing scene and have a name in mind.

Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) is chosen to become a street racer and mingle with Dominic Torreto's (Vin Diesel) gang to find out who is behind the hijackings.

Brian begins to discover the true depth and integrity to Dominic's gang, leaving him to question who's side he should be on.

OK, its no Thespian play, the script won't win any awards, but that really isn't the point. Its a banquet of big stunts, petrol and testosterone. Plenty of fast cars and fast driving. One of my favourites.

This is hardly deep-thinking cinema, but is in no way lessened because of that. Full of high-octane street racing scenes and plenty of automotive eye-candy, the excitement rarely lets up. The characters are not deep, but are appealing nonetheless and some development is apparent. Paul Walker looks almost too clean-cut for the role of O'Connor, but pulls it off with some flair. Vin Diesel is the actor of note in this film however, giving Toretto plenty of appeal and authenticity. This is a film about cars and street racing at the end of the day, and in that sense it doesn't disappoint.

  The fast and the furious

Faster than Gone in Sixty Seconds and more furious than Driven, The Fast and the Furious is a racing film aimed at a younger audience more concerned with tricked-out cars than stories of old-man redemption. Based in the world of illegal street racing, it tells the story of an undercover agent (Paul Walker) who must infiltrate this hip underworld of fast wheels and fast women in order to bust a hijacking ring. To these ends, he befriends a gang led by Vin Diesel and eventually earns their respect as a smart and savvy racer.

Of course, this setup leads to the typical "honor among thieves" story you'd expect: Walker gets too personally attached to the gang he will eventually have to betray, his chief busts his balls over it, and he falls in love with Diesel's sister (played by Jordana Brewster). By the end of the whole sordid affair, he will have to choose between duty and loyalty--and you can probably guess how he reconciles everything. This builds up to a rather boring ending, and the climax of the movie is an idiotic game of chicken between Diesel and Walker, who gun their cars and head for an oncoming train. It doesn't make much sense and comes out of the blue, making one wonder what is worse: the random acts of machismo, or the sappy soap opera garbage that develops between Walker and Brewster (when she finds out he's really a cop, he naturally gives her the "Yes, it was all a lie, but my feelings for you were real" speech).

Meanwhile, some of the action sequences are anticlimactic. For example, when a rival gang kills one of Diesel's friends, he goes on a vigilante spree of vengeance by chasing them in his car. But when he finally catches them, what does he do? He simply knocks them off their motorcycles, then considers his work done. Somehow I expected more from a character who is an ex-con and enraged at the death of a close friend. The Crow would have been disappointed. Also serving as a buzzkill is the formula some of the races fall into: two cars are going neck and neck, someone pushes a nitro button, and BAM--they suddenly pull ahead and win.

These faults aside, there's a lot that makes The Fast and the Furious an engaging movie that can be enjoyed on a pure adrenaline level. The racing lives up to the film's title despite the cheesiness of the nitro scenes, and when the cars come to life, special effects let us follow the camera's rollercoaster perspective at it surfs through the internal mechanics of the vehicles. The sheer speed depicted is enough to get audiences going, and a well-matched soundtrack and slinking women on the sidelines add to the overall atmosphere. The scenes in which modified Hondas are used to hijack big rigs are particularly good, with the cars swerving beneath the trucks at insane speeds.

While the characters are mostly one-dimensional, the actors are adequate. Michelle Rodriguez (Girlfight) has a modest role as Diesel's girlfriend, but she brings a lot of cool attitude to the group as the gang's most showoff driver. She talks smack to all the guys, and when she thinks another woman is putting the moves on her man, she goes the catfight route, sniffing near the other girl and asking, "Is that skank I smell?"

Vin Diesel gives the only other noteworthy performance. This is an actor who can make just about any character interesting, no matter how formulaic they may seem on paper. In Pitch Black, he played convicted killer Riddick with a compelling mix of cruelty and compassion--twisted, but

The Fast And The Furious (DVD 2002)
Review created: 09/04/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The best movie of the summer does not have CGI dinosaurs, exploding World War II battleships and actors in monkey suits. Instead, it has a load of cars, a cast of unknowns and a script that seems lifted verbatim from a 1950s B-movie. Yet "The Fast and the Furious" still manages to boast more action, sex and adrenaline than "Pearl Harbor", "Jurassic Park III", and "Planet of the Apes" combined.

Director Rob Cohen's game plan is simple. Where this year's other blockbusters aimed high and fell short, his succeeds by setting its sights low and reaching them comfortably.

Rookie whitebread cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) is ordered to infiltrate a team of fearless bandits who hijack trucks on the open highway in their souped-up imported cars. But first, he must win the trust of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), a leading light in Los Angeles' illegal street racing circuit. The deeper Brian digs, the more he is drawn to this high-speed, high-risk world, especially after falling for Dominic's lovely sister Mia (Jordana Brewster).

Cue a relentless barrage of auto-vehicular mayhem, which gives the aptly named Diesel plenty of room to showcase his muscular, gravel-voiced charisma.

There's nothing daring or high concept about this shamelessly derivative slice of teenage schlock. What it does offer is a visceral, high-octane, Formula One of a flick that puts the pedal to the metal in the opening minutes and does not take the foot off the accelerator until the end credits. Eat your heart out, Jeremy Clarkson!

The cars are the stars of the film!
The fast-moving pace is gripping.
The sounds are awesome!
The story line was average.
There was plenty of special features to go by.
The stunt drivers take full credit.
There was nothing I particularly disliked about this film.
I bought this film because it's a classic in it's own right.

If your female you'll like Vin Diesel (maybe Paul Walker). If your male you'll like the cars and the speed. Jap Imports doing what they do best. To be honest I think Paul Walker is a 'fake' actor, I just don't believe him. Who cares??? I love this film, you don't have to think and you drive to work a little quicker in the morning 8/10

  Good Film
Review created: 15/04/09

It was one of those films that, gave some fresh air into the filming world.
It's an action film based on the underground world that would be known as 'street' racing. A good film in the sense that when you first watch it, you never know who is 'behind' what is happening. They give subtle hints here and there, but the overal suspense is kept well throughout, Vin Diesel plays a good part and plays it well, based upon the 'tough guy' role, Paul Walker on the otherhand is the 'cool cop' easy going dude, who never really looses his cool.

If you like action films and fancy something different then this is it. If you like it, then they made a sequel named 2 Fast 2 Furious, and a 3rd named Fast And Furious Tokyo Drift (which acording to some isn't that great), and very recently released Fast And Furious (the 4th installment with the original cast from the 1st in the set). So those will keep you busy if you do intend to go on.

Storyline isn't too bad, although some parts are a little dull and somewhat stupid "If I win I, get your car and the respect" naaah, that just doesn't sound right within the street world.

If anyone has just bought it then Enjoy the film!
