Review
Unlike most movies Fantasia has no story. This groundbreaking feature comprises eight segments of classical music played by the Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by the renowned Leopold Stokowski with Disney animators creative interpretations of the classical pieces. The result is some beautiful animation and an explosion of colour that is as vibrant today as it was since it's theatrical release in 1940. The most recognised segment is Mickey Mouse in Paul Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice where an eager student tries his Master's sorcerer's hat and assumes his powers ....only to make a complete mess. The fit between animation and music is just perfect. Fantasia won an honorary Academy Award in 1942 for the following:
Walt Disney, William E. Garity, J.N.A. Hawkins,
For their outstanding contribution to the advancement of the use of sound in motion pictures through the production of Fantasia
Leopold Stokowski (and his associates)
For their unique achievement in the creation of a new form of visualized music in Walt Disney's production Fantasia, thereby widening the scope of the motion picture as entertainment and as an art form
