Classic Fairport album originally from 1969. Sandy Denny's magical voice, coupled with Richard Thompson's superb guitar playing and Swarb's reckless violin energize the tracks throughout. Whilst all the tracks have seen the light of day on more recent albums, there is a freshness and simplicity surrounding these versions. I particularly like Matty Groves and The Deserter, being raw and unadorned.

I feel that I am transported back to the early Fairport years, back to my own youth, which is delightful. The remastering has improved the sound quality without detracting from the freshness. I was very impressed with this album. My only regret is that it is not twice as long.

If you only buy one Fairport Convention album, Leige & Leif has to be the one. It's 40 years old now! I guess the "remastering" helps as it still sounds crisp and up to the minute as you can get for UK folk music.

This is recognised as one of the best Fairport albums. I thought that I'd add it to my collection after all these years. Super album. All great tracks. Everyone should have a copy of this. It's an essential album.

Originally bought this album new when first issued in 1969 on vinyl, the cd is nearly as good but still prefer the vinyl, the remastered version has 2 bonus tracks so this does give it an edge.
In my view Fairports finest work.

  Liege and Leif
Review created: 27/06/07

Having worn my vinyl copy paper-thin I decided to buy the CD at last. In my opinion the best of all the Fairport albums, with Crazy Man Michael and Come All Ye being my personal favourites. There is never a folk festival without one of the tracks being covered, which shows how it stands the test of time.
I have seen fairport perform many times and for anyone new to their music, I would recommend this as the perfect introduction.

Lesley

Fairport Convention - Liege And Lief: The no. 1!

I have been loving Liege & Lief for almot 30 years, when I bought it as vynil LP. It has been rightly considered by BBC Folk listeners an no.1 album in the history of British Folk music, and in any sense it fully deserves this credit. Rearrangements of traditional songs and instrumentals are amazing, so that rathers that expaining in words what FOLK-ROCK means, you only need to put this on your player and listen!
