The Fuji Finepix S8000 is an 8 megapixels digital camera. Its main attraction is the extra long 18x optical zoom lens. This is the longest lens you can find on a consumer digital camera at this moment in time. The long lens is ideal for zooming right in on any subject, but it is likely to be especially useful for wildlife and sports photography. The Finepix S8000 also comes with other more typical features such as image stabilisation and face detection focusing.

I personally found this to be a great camera with exellent pictures in any condition.

Finepix s8000 good but not so good

I bought this to upgrade my Fuji s7000. As a good starter camera this is excellent; I found the screen bright and very clear. The zoom range was a revelation. I bought it for wildlife photo's. However, I am a semi pro Photographer and my prints have to be top quality... I found a lot of colour fringing at over 300mm. Also it is a very compact body and i have big hands and found it very uncomfortable to hold. It is very responsive and ideal for everyday use, but for an experienced person or a photography enthusiast I think the image quality is a little compromised by the huge zoom range. 28 - 450mm ish! There have to be compromises with this type of camera. I prefer my s7000 picture quality - I print to a3+; the handling also I find intuitive. (I also have an S3 pro slr) Overall an excellent upgrade from a digital compact and most buyers will be more than happy with the quality. Do not go over a4 and you'll not have any issues. Just be sure to read the instructions to get the best from it. It is a very advanced bit of kit; though it has automatic modes to help you along. I feel overall it is the best bridge camera by far currently available for price and ease of use.

Great camera, pity about the support.

My previous experience of 'real' photography was with a 35mm SLR camera and although I liked the convenience of digital cameras I missed the control and quality of a SLR. I was, in my naivety, hoping to buy a digital SLR so that I could use my collection of lenses and filters. I then learned that this would not be possible and started researching the best camera for my budget. Initially I was looking for a 10.1mp, but then I read a couple of reviews for 18x optical zoom cameras. I worked out that this should give me what I wanted. I then saw a review for the Fuiji S8000fd and I was sold. I researched prices and came up with a 'best price' of £280.00. Armed with this information I entered Ebay and to my delight there was a 'slightly' damaged S8000fd listed. I 'won' the camera for £114.
The damage is a broken mode dial. Considering the RRP price for this camera this plastic wheel is a flimsy affair and Fuiji have nosedived in my estimation as they refuse to supply another unless I furnish them with my electrical qualifications - (to push fit a plastic wheel!!). Never mind Fuiji I can build my own.
However, I am delighted with the camera and its performance. (My reluctance to describe it as excellent is covered in the previous paragraph.) I have a photo of the new 'Sheppy bridge' taken from south Rainham (Kent) although enhanced with Serif software it is easily clear enough to see the vehicles on it. In other photos at less ambitious range the depth of field is remarkable. Wide angle shots it manages without the distortion I was used to with a 2.8mm lens. Colour fine. Low light and high contrast shots it handles without problem. I really like the facility of two programmable 'modes'. The 'anti-shake/vibration' facility is a boon at high zoom settings and the face recognition is something I am learning to appreciate.

In short, this camera gives me everything I wanted(and more) from a SLR without the need to carry a large bag of equipment.

  Watch out for import tax

I decided to buy the S800fd camera from ebay for one very good reason, it was much cheaper than everywhere else. The buy it now price of £150 when in the shops is £250.
Bargain right, I bought the item knowing I'd have to pay £40 postage and it was being posted from Hong Kong. Only 2 days had passed and it was delivered. Very quick, this was the fastest I've ever had anything delivered when its come all the way from Hong Kong. The camera is a great piece of kit and I'm very pleased with it. You can take shots in manual and get some great effects or just leave it in auto, let the camera do the work and still take some brilliant pictures. It also came with other freebe's like a 4gb memory card, camera case, card reader some other items as well. Well worth it.
The shine wore off a bit though when I received an invoice from FEDEX who stated that in order to speed up delivery, they had paid the import duty and that now I had to pay them £29.10.
So what was the £40 postage for?
I also needed to send off to Fuji to get a manual, because mine came in chinese, which i am not particulaly fluent. This cost £9.
So altogether at £230 I still came out smiling but if i'd not been stung for import tax i'd be better off.
It hasn't put me off buying from Hong Kong, as I've bought goods from there since and everything has been fine.

I bought this camera for taking shots from far away, and specifically when going to festivals. It is a little bigger than normal digital cameras but the clarity of the Pics and anti shake feature makes it well worth it.

the pictures that come out whether they are of people or places are really clear and flattering.
Only downside was the fireworks option, pics were kind of distorted and pic taking was much better when in auto mode.

A very dynamic versatile camera. The 18x zoom is great but also the super macro mode is excellent for close up work. I have had mine for 3 months an I am pleased with it.

The price and ease of use won me over

I was thinking about upgrading my digital camera as I already have a Fuji S5000 which is a brilliant camera for the am/pro. A real workhorse. I then saw that there was a new Fuji model out call the S8000fd and I read up on that and was especially taken with the description of the powerful lense with the ability to shoot at high speed, 14fps! excellent for wildlife photography. Also there are a number of preset programmes for the beach, sunset, night shots and lots of others. I am gradually getting to experiment with this camera and it is quite impressive. I am looking forward spring and opportunities to get out and about with this clever camera.

This camera is an excellent product, it is a aimed at those that wish to move up from a basic digital camera. It retains some of the basic settings and also incorporates elements of the digital slr and the images it produces are those that you hope to see, clarity and are sharpness are very good.Whilst I have only been able to test the camera (because it is a present)I am considering buying one for myself.Lastly buy it it works and I sure you will like it.

Likes:
Size- just ideal for all, easy to hold with one hand.
Easy menu system.
Manual is straight forward and informative.
As soon as it was out of the box it was easy to take pictures, initially it arrived setup to take black and white photos but it took only a few minutes to figure out that you just go into the "F" menu to setup for colour photos.
Pictures come out really well and you have the option of the viewfinder or the lcd screen.
Battery life seems good, have used it for 2 weeks and taken approx 760 pictures so far and it has not complained of battery issues, came with Duracells.
Dislikes:
No lithium Ion Batteries or charge pack available but as I just said the battery life seems ok, am carrying extra rechargeables AA just in case though.

  Impressive Camera
Review created: 30/07/09(updated 06/09/09)
by:

I wasn't expecting too much from a lens with such a wide zoom range. After six months I have to say the camera can be relied on to produce sharp, perfectly exposed pictures with realistic colour. I have started exploring all the various settings, but if in doubt, set to auto, point and shoot - always gives an excellent result.

Ilike it so much, I am thinking to upgrade to the s9600, which has more pixels and RAW image capture, but I might regret parting with the S8000

Update:
I went for the s9600 - it's going back on ebay.

The s800fd gives me everything I am looking for:

Sharp images with detail that lets you see the texture of the subject you are photographing.
Good auto white balance even in low light and mixed light.
Good low light auto focus.
Good iso range (loses a bit of detail at the higher setting, but still gives a good photo.

For me this is the best value camera around.

  poor quality plastic mode dial
Review created: 26/07/09

great camera , great zoom but a cheap plastic mode dial which is very likely to break as it did on mine. I was so impressed with this camera in the beginning i bought one for my sister. My mode dial broke after a year and half of very very little usage, now were just waiting for the same to happen to the one i bought my sister ... my fuji days are over .

this camera is an excellent entry digital style slr, with many usefull features, excellent zoom control, the auto modes make it very easy to use.
it is light and compact enough to carry around.
small critism is only about instruction manual is that for a complete novice there is not enough detail for use of different functions and abbreviations proliferate throughout.
all in all im very pleased with this camera.

Review created: 07/03/09

Megazoom feature, the key feature of this model, works well, together with anti-shake. However, the picture quality in low light is poor, in contrast to that expected of the wide range of ISO values. Start up time average.
