S5700 - Good performance, good value, but not perfect

I bought this camera to replace an early Fhji compact which has performed excellently for several years - I wanted something with greater resolution.
The S5700 is a good performer, offering all the auto and manual functions that almost anyone could want.
It is also relatively easy to use, the functions being easy to identify, intuative, and easy to select. I particularly like the way functions are described in text on the LCD display as you are selecting, rather than showing a tiny symbol the meaning of which you can never seem to remember. Flash and macro settings are particular examples of this.
The LCD screen is large and quite bright so can be used in most conditions. There is also still the option of a traditional viewfinder - usefull in very bright light conditions.
However, although a superb performer this camera is not perfect - the problems are all about the physical layout of its components and probably result from too much emphasis being placed on reducing physical dimensions to a minimum during design.
Firstly the auto flash - this has been designed to pop up automatically when needed if the flash control is set to auto. I am at a loss to understand why this is not fixed in the ready position as the natural way to hold this camera (there being really no body to hold to the left side of the lens), is with the fingers of your left hand on top of the flash housing, thus preventing it from flipping up.
Secondly, although the zoom is very good, offering a widw range and being fast to adjust, the control for this, although on top of the camera, is located facing towards the front of the camera. This is not a very natural position to place your finger and the adjustment being quite rapid means that you will somtimes overshoot when adjusting.
Thirdly, the battery compartment is locked by a push button - why they didn't use a sliding lock is beyond me. It is possibly to accidently push the button and open the battery door as this is where your right thumb naturally rests when pointing the camera.
If this camera had been made just a little physically larger I have no doubt that these problems would not exist, but if you can live with it being just a little awkward to physically handle it is a nice piece of kit.
The latest FinePix software which comes with it is also a great improvement over early versions and does all the routine things that most users will want quickly and simply.
