FUJIFILM FinePix J10 Digital Camera

Bought for a trip to Eurodisney, wanted a small camera to pop in the pocket for quick snaps of the kids. Very nicely built, good, quality feel in the hand. Good sized viewscreen, but no viewfinder means it can be difficult to see the shot in bright light. Loads of modes plus video (with sound), not explored all of them yet. Full auto mode returns good results but seems to use the flash in preference to raising the ISO rating when light is low. As a small camera, the flash is quite small so don't expect great range - I got better results changing to a mode allowing the ISO to be raised. That said, this was in November, gloomy weather and quite a lot of indoor and night shots, so it coped pretty well overall, even some respectable shots of night-time illuminations and the Disney parade. When trying for slow shots in low light I found the 2 second self-timer useful as it lets you concentrate on holding still without shaking the camera when pressing the shutter release. Speaking of which, it's easy to confuse the power button with the shutter - more than once turning the unit off instead of taking a shot, and this was a common error to all users, so watch out. Controls are few but quick and simple to use, as you want in a quick to use snapshot situation. Warm up is reasonably quick from switch on. Zoom range a little limited but fine for this calss of camera. Uses xD and SD cards, not tried SD but no problems from the 2GB xD I fitted (none supplied as standard, just enough internal memory for 3 full res shots). No case supplied which would have been a bonus, but the camera seems quite tough with the lens cover shut. The large screen allows good viewing of pictures, and the filing system automatically stores shots by day taken, which was great over a four day trip. Images can be cropped/rotated and stored directly, which is handy if you're running out of card space and want to compact things.
Picture results have been excellent, nice and sharp with plenty of detail - got some very nice portrait shot of the children. Autofocus seems to need plenty of light to give a good lock, but even when giving an AF warning focus is often OK. The basic manual recommends using AF lock to cure this but I have yet to look at the full manual (on CD) to check this out. The only other problem has been getting left hand fingers in shot, but that is just down to getting used to a compact camera after being used to a larger 'prosumer' fuji.
Uses an NP-45 lithium ion battery so it may be worth hunting down a spare if you're used to easily available AA or AAA batteries in emergencies. The battery is quick to charge though, less than 2 hours and has given pretty good life so far given the high proportion of flash shots we took.
Overall extremely pleased with the camera and would strongly recommend it, given the shortcomings mentioned above resulting from such a compact unit, but it's still early days and I expect results to get even better with a little more familiarity.
