Eyes Wide Shut (DVD 2000)

Description
Stanley Kubrick's final film is a mature, highly intelligent, thrilling masterpiece of sexual obsession and marital (in)fidelity. Tom Cruise stars as Bill Harford, a doctor who becomes obsessed with a sexual fantasy that his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), confesses to him. Although the fantasy (involving a naval officer) occurred only in Alice's mind, Bill can't get it out of his own head; his obsession leads him through a series of potential sexual encounters, each one surrounded by the specter of death. His whole world threatens to unravel as he falls deeper and deeper into a web of mystery, lies, and deceit.<BR>Kubrick's film breathes with vivid blues, reds, and blacks, the threat of illicit sex and death lurking around every corner. Cruise and Kidman, who are married in real life, are utterly convincing as a happy couple suddenly forced to reexamine their faith in each other. Sidney Pollack, Todd Field, Julienne Davis, Marie Richardson, and Vinessa Shaw sparkle in minor roles. Based on the novella TRAUMNOVELLE by Arthur Schnitzler, EYES WIDE SHUT is a brilliant examination of the psychological nature of sex and marriage, of faith and faithlessness, of obsession and desire. Kubrick said that his last film (he died shortly before the film opened) was "my best film ever;" while that is debatable, there is no doubting that the film is a splendid finale to a glorious career.

Director Stanley Kubrick's last silver-screen odyssey dishes up a chillingly distant examination of carnal desire and obsession. A rhubarb about fidelity with his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), sends Dr. Bill Hartford (Tom Cruise) reeling into the Manhattan night. He soon finds himself in a surreal succession of sexually charged encounters, capped off by a clandestine visit to an upper-crust orgy where what he witnesses could get him snuffed.

An opulent visual symphony on the universally potent theme of sexual jealousy: an experience few admit to but which only the living dead have not suffered. Enjoy the luscious New York interiors; the magisterial shot making of Kubrick, the sheer breathless beauty of Kidman, and a delicious curdling cameo by Alan Cumming. Oh yes - Tom Cruise is in it too.

Currently unpopular with a certain type of self conscious critic, appreciation of this film will grow over time; a fate common to all of Kubrick's films. This is a film to luxuriate in.

  Interesting entertainment
Review created: 05/07/06

I bought this film after reading the Da Vinci Code, and Dan Brown's reference to it, so i thought i'd buy it cheap and find out what it was like.
First time i watched it, a little confused and (blush blush) shocked, but enjoyed it never the less. Second time i watched it i understood it a little better.
It's a good film if you want something a bit different and a glance into the world a cults and their practices. I like how it explores the marriage relationship and the ending is hopeful.
Overall, a steady 4/5.

  Eyes Wide Shut - Disappointing

Had heard lots about this film and being a fan of Stanley Kubrick thought it was about time I watched it. This film could have been much more interesting, but instead it tells a very short story in a very long time. The acting wasn't great but there are a few good scenes. Overall - disappointing.
