The legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table receives its most impressive screen treatment in Excalibur, from visionary movie maker John Boorman.

All the elements of Sir Thomas Malory's classic Le Morte D'Arthur are here: Arthur removing the sword Excalibur from the stone; the Round Table's noble birth and tragic decline; the heroic attempts to recover the Holy Grail; and the shifting balance of power between wily wizard Merlin and evil sorceress Morgana. With Patrick Stewart, Gabriel Byrne and Liam Neeson in notable early screen roles, Excalibur serves up, as The New Yorker's Pauline Kael wrote, "one lush, enraptured scene after another".

Excalibur, legend of Merlin and King Arthur

This is a film about, in my opinion, the mystical legend of Merlin and King Arthur. When the land is battle weary and torn apart by fueding, here is an archaic story told by well played roles.
Although the film was made in 1981 it has'nt lost any of it's impact for taking us back in time when this nation was born, in breath taking fashion.

On the down side, its dated. On the up side, personally, its still the best story of Arthur ever put on screen. Merlin steals the show.

Definately worth a look. It was longer than we expected and in the early stages of the film we thought we would be disappointed. However, my husband thought it was first rate - I would have liked it to be more realistic in a fantasy kind of way. Having said that, this film was made 8 years earlier than the DVD standards of today.

This is a great film. The performance by the bloke who plays Merlin is quality and the whole film's a bit surreal. Good stuff.

  Superb film
Review created: 12/12/08

Excalibur is a graphic telling of the story of Arthur, as seen through the eyes of Merlin, the wizard.
It contains some big fight scenes, with some gruesome images, along with a graphic sex scene at the beginning.
But it is well made, and acted, and moves along at a nice pace.

Quite simply the best ever film of the Arthurian Legend
Review created: 04/12/08(updated 09/12/08)

Another film I've seen many times and had to buy on DVD. The best ever film version of the arthurian legend by a country mile, faithful to the mainstream story, with an otherwordly/magickal feel throughout. Merlin as a silver-helmed nutter (not the stereotypical old man with long white hair and a beard) is outrageous, with an all-star cast. Brilliant costumes, a genuine sense of menace from the baddies, only let down by a wooden script. All together now "Anaal Nathrakh, Uthvas bethud, Doghiel Dyenvei!"
