In 1997, the island of Manhattan has been turned into the world's largest maximum-security prison, a place where the worst of humanity is sent to rot. The U.S. Government finds itself in a major crisis when the president's plane crash-lands in New York only days before a vital peace summit between major warring nations is to take place. The president survives the crash, but is taken hostage by the denizens of Manhattan and held for ransom. Only war hero turned felon Snake Plissken can save the day, and he is offered a simple deal for his work: save the president and live, fail to save him and die. The one-eyed bandit sets to work, cutting a path of destruction to the president that has to be seen to be believed. Kurt Russell creates the indelible character of Snake Plissken as no other actor could have. Wisecracking and cool under the very worst of pressures, Snake is the ultimate bad good guy. Often copied, but never duplicated, 'Escape From New York' is full of the wit, energy and action that mark a John Carpenter picture.

Reviews Review created: 05/06/08 by: this is what can only be concidered an action adventure sci/fi. sadly it is rather dated today becouse of location but a well acted enjoyable romp through a future that luckily we never had. it should be a cult classic and one of the directors tour de-force movies. sadly i think Lee Van Cleaf was under used in this production and Kurt Russle was at his best even the clint Eastwood immatation was classic funny. the cameo roles in this movie are well defined and enjoyable to watch. this is a sci/fi movie i always enjoy putting on and watching, great watching for any sci/fi fan, Review ID: 10000000007435169 Was this review helpful? This film is class. if the british justice system wants to know what to do about our prison situation this is it. Snake blisken as the main character, doesn't come any better than that. Once in you have no chance of getting out again. When the the US President (Pleasence) crashes onto the island, the Police-army turn to former war hero and outlaw, Snake Plissken (Russell), to save him - with the help of some deadly implants ... Once again, my view on what makes a good Carpenter movie can be seen; Although a fairly epic picture on paper, at the time this was a low budget film. However, all the things that make a classic are in perfect proportion: Simple, moody direction, first-class performances from the whole cast, and surprisingly good FX's - considering the time this was made and the funds they had! The Special Edition of this film contains a whole host of extras which make it even more of a worthwhile purchase. As well as the [always informative] commentary from Carpenter & Russell, there are deleted scenes, trailers and a featurette. A film to grace any DVD collection. To win his freedom he must accomplish this within 24 hours, or the explosive charge inside his veins will blow his head off. A truly great Sci-Fi action film, darkly comic in tone too, from John Carpenter, at the height of his game. Everything works in this film - the story, the characters, the cast (Pleasance, Van Cleef, Borgnine etc - WOW!)- a faultless film in my opinion - oh and then there is the pneumatic Adrienne Barbeau (Why was i born so late?)
