Disney takes a pop at its own back catalogue in Enchanted, a sprightly spoof on fairy-tale lore that both embraces and subverts its cartoon clichés. Amy Adams is Giselle, the animated princess given human form when she is spirited away to New York by Susan Sarandon's evil queen Narissa. It's not long, though, before the Big Apple has succumbed to her wholesome appeal in a lively family caper that should be a decent Christmas earner for the House of Mouse.

Tarzan director Kevin Lima's strongest card is to take classic tropes from yesteryear and give them a post-modern makeover. ("Where will I find a fairy godmother at this late hour?" moans Adams at one point.) Given shelter by Patrick Dempsey's cynical divorce lawyer, Giselle repays the favour by calling on a grotesque menagerie of CG vermin (pigeons and roaches and rats, oh my!) to help her clean house. An amble in Central Park suddenly morphs into a full-scale production number á la Beauty And The Beast, while the eagle-eyed audience member will spot sneaky nods to Mary Poppins, Lady And The Tramp and a host of other favourites.

"A PERKY DELIGHT"

True, there are missteps. Why cast Broadway star Idina Menzel as Dempsey's naggy girlfriend, then deny her a chance to sing? And why does it take so long for Sarandon to make the journey from mythical Andalasia to modern-day Manhattan? For the most part, however, this is a perky delight that takes a cheeky glee in biting the gloved hand that feeds.

A classic Disney animated fairy tale meets with the modern, live-action romantic comedy in Walt Disney Pictures' Enchanted. Featuring an all-star cast, the film follows the beautiful princess Giselle (Amy Adams) as she is banished by an evil queen (Susan Saradon) from her magical, musical animated land and finds herself in the gritty reality of the streets of modern-day Manhattan.

Shocked by this strange new environment that doesn't operate on a “happily ever after” basis, Giselle is now adrift in a chaotic world badly in need of enchantment. But when Giselle begins to fall in love with a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) who has come to her aid -- even though she is already promised to a perfect fairy tale prince (James Marsden) back home – she has to wonder: can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world?

I know now there is somewhere called Andelasia :o) This is everything I was brainwashed into believing when I was young rolled into 1. No wonder I am still single waiting for Prince Charming to gallop over to me on his mighty stead and give me true loves kiss!!! Hahaha - A must for any hopeless romantic.

  An Enchanting Film!
Review created: 01/01/09

Perhaps ment as a childrens film, but I'm 29 and loved it, not one for the boys though.

Full of beautiful people (loving James Marsden!), catchy songs, romance, comedy (Grumpy the dwarf sticks out for me)...the links between this story and classic fairytales such as snow white and cinderella are very clever. The crossover from 2d to 3d is great, especially with the chipmonk.

Not really a film for those who get caught up in the reality of everything but if you like a good fairytale you'll love Enchanted!

And everyone lived happily ever after...

Cute film, quite funny as well. I like the way the film was making fun of the traditional fairytales, but not in a spiteful or horrible way. Good effects too.

  Enchanted is Enchanting
Review created: 27/04/08

Finally, a film that does exactly what it says on the tin. This is truly a fantastic film for all the family. The film begins as a traditional, beautiful Disney animation set in a wonderful fairytale world filled with Princes and Princesses, magic and giants.

After an unfortunate encounter with a giant, Giselle, a lovely young woman meets Prince Edward and in classic fairy tale fashion, the two fall in love and plan to marry the next day. However, Prince Edward's evil stepmother, Queen Narissa, has other ideas and plots to get rid of Giselle, thereby keeping her throne. The moment when she pushes Giselle into a massive magical pit is when the film makes its ingenious transition from animation to live action. Giselle ends up in New York City - as Narissa evilly puts it "A place where there are no happily ever afters" - and is lost and alone. She eventually runs into a lawyer played by Patrick Dempsey, and his young daughter who is especially taken with her. Eventually, Prince Edward also ventures to the city to find his true love and after this happens, anything goes.

Amy Adams' performance as Giselle, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy is a revelation. She shines in every scene that she is in with her wonderfully sweet and funny peformance, which has her singing at random and calling to her animal friends to help tidy up.

The film is an intelligent send up of classic Disney fairy tales as well as a genuinely heartwarming love story and exciting adventure. Children of all ages as well as adults will love this as it really has something for everyone. One of the best films of 2007, if not ever.

  Enchanting and fun !
Review created: 19/04/08

A fun, original Disney film that combines nostalgia with fresh new ideas. Part animation, part live action, this movie is a real treat for Disney fans everywhere! Amy Adams is brilliant as the ditzy, loveable princess Giselle who is thrown by an evil queen from Andalasia (her country) into the heart of Manhattan Island, New York. She is then taken in by cynical father-of-one divorce lawyer Robert (Patrick Dempsey). His exasperation turns into affection as more and more of Andalasia's citizens arrive in the Big Apple.

The DVD was in excellent condition and was everything you'd expect from Disney!
