  Austen would have been proud!

As a novel Emma is full of wit, satire and social commentary and the film does not let the book down. Paltrow plays Emma brilliantly and is supported by an excellent cast, particularly Jeremy Norton as Mr Knightley. The actors really lift the witty retorts, the social observations and the manners, particularly of the more ridiculous characters right off the page.

Emma is a very cleverly written novel and this transpires well in the film. I bought the DVD as I had just finished reading Emma for the fifth time and wanted to watch it brought to life - I also liked it better than an earlier remake of the novel as Emma was played by Gwyneth Paltrow ( whom I can normally take or leave ) and I felt she was excellent - even her British upper class accent was faultless. Well done all round ! - if you are a fan of Jane Austen, Classic English Literature or just good old fashioned wit and bodged romance ( without the soppiness) this is the film for you - oh and EWan Mcgregor is in it too which always a bonus!!!

  Emma the Hollywood version
Review created: 05/02/09

I love the costumes and colour in this movie and most of the acting too. I thought however that with the exception of the actress cast as Mrs Elton, the recent ITV dramatisation of Emma with Kate Beckinsdale & Samantha Morton was by far the superior when it came to faithfulness to the story.
Juliette Stevens in this movie as Mrs Elton is very well cast.
I actually re read the book recently and watched both this film and the ITV version immediately after and enjoyed both very much but for different reasons. And I've seen the old BBC version too which had it's own merits as well.
When it comes to costumes this film has Gwenyth Paltrow in some fabulous dresses and in the ITV version Kate Beckinsdale has some amazing hats!
I bought the film cos it's one of those classics you can watch again and again and there's nothing offensive in it so I can see myself curling up on a Saturday afternoon with my daughters for a nice hour of romance a la Gwenyth in the years to come.

  Another happy ending...
Review created: 04/01/09

Emma is a classic.

After she successfully makemakes her nanny and a family friend she tries it on others only for it to go wrong...noone ends up with the people she plans and she discovers she was in love the whole time...but does he love her back?

This is a lovely costume drama but if you don't like the classics try 'Clueless' which is the modern adaptaion.

  Emma DVD by Jane Austen

Have got all other Jane Austen discs but never had Emma. Really like this story as I can identify with Emma who is always helping people. I tend to be like that, helping other people but not thinking so much about myself, although regretting it later!

Great story and good quality disc.

  Emma (dvd 2001)

Another fantastic adaptation to one of Jane Austen's timeless romantic novels.

Emma is a young women who can't help meddling in other peoples affairs and tries to play "match maker" with little success. It is only when she believes her handsome brother-in-law shows an interest in one young lady, that she realises her biggest mistake yet.
A classic romantic story of a young women discovering her true feelings is it loathing or love - does he feel the same?
I love this film decided it is one to keep and watch time and time again - Gwyneth Paltrow is perfect for this role and Alan Cummings is a true gentleman.

  J'aime Jane Austen!

Witty and an extremely well-adapted version of a Jane Austen classic. All the cast carried the plot perfectly, in particular the comical characters of Miss Bates played by Sophie Thompson (Emma Thompson's sister), and Mrs Augusta Elton (Juliet Stevenson). A perfect 'period' film to watch when you're lazing around the house and longing for that Mr Knightley!
