Album Notes Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, acoustic guitar); Scotty Moore (guitar); Bill Black (upright bass); D.J. Fontana (drums); The Jordanaires (background vocals).Includes liner notes by Gordon Minto. The Presley catalog has been plundered more mercilessly than that of any other artist, resulting in acres of barrel scrapings that too often obscure the real gems that justify Elvis' title as king of rock & roll. Unsurprisingly, one of the most notable exceptions to this archival carnage occurs outside the dominion of the RCA label, which owns the rights to virtually all of Elvis' recorded material. This UK import offers early live Presley recordings from his formative years, '54-'56. Anyone who owns Elvis' SUN SESSIONS (or has any sense of rock & roll history) will be familiar with most of the songs here, such as "Good Rockin' Tonight," "That's Alright Mama" and "Baby Let's Play House." However, even hardcore Presleyites will be knocked for a loop by the unbridled vigor of Presley and his classic combo featuring Scotty Moore, Bill Black and D.J. Fontana, as they charge through these tunes like crazed scientists in the throes of unprecedented discovery. If you want to know what the big deal is about Elvis, or if you just want a fresh perspective on his early work, look to this invaluable live document.
Editorial Reviews 4 stars out of 5 - ...astonishingly raw, bringing Presley's hamfisted acoustic technique to the fore, but a gloriously trebly 7-song segment instantly proves why 'Hound Dog' and 'Blue Suede Shoes' once sounded like the most incendiary stuff on earth... Q (03/01/2000)
