Fab film! You know the story (which of course is rousing, patriotic and epic) - as far as cinema is concerned its about what is done with the story that counts, and this Director/cast have whipped up a magical visual feast with only a little licence. Makes you proud to be English! If you like Elizabeth, see this film. If you like history, see this film. If you like cinema, see this film!

The film was enjoyable. As a sequel, it is well worth watching/buying. In terms of historical accuracy, I believe some instances throughout the film are questionable, however, this does not deter from the overall impact the film has on its audience. Great performances from Cate Blanchett and Clive Owen.

  Beautiful but somewhat disappointing...

Lovely scenery and pageantry. This strayed too far from reality and historical fact. It's a case of wanting too much to make a sequel and not quite hitting the target. The war scenes with Elizabeth in the saddle with hair streaming behind her were gorgeous, but not factual. There is no record of her actually going into battle. After going through her "virgin" transformation and cutting off her hair, painting her face white, etc... why is she all of a sudden a young girl with long girl when she goes into battle. Too much Hollywood here, not enough history. In summary, why mess with a history as rich and interesting as the Elizathan age when it certainly had enough pageantry to please almost anyone. The first movie was fabulous- they should have left it there!

Elizabeth - the Golden Age was a fantastic film and a brilliant sequel. Cate Blanchett played elizabeth brilliantly and it was fab to watch. She really portrayed the queen well and it was a shame when the film ended. Film was very moving at times and had good fights and battles. Highly recommended for others to watch. I bought it because i enjoyed the film because i enjoyed the first film elizabeth and wanted to see the sequel to it, im glad i did!!!

  Another sumptuous Elizabethan romp

Forget history - this is entertainment BASED on history, not a history lesson.

If you do that, then this is a great film.

Not quite as good as the first film, but not far off - still as stunning to look at and very well acted by all involved.

Another brilliant performance from Cate Blanchett.

Not as good as the first film but then if it was it would have been superb. Still a visually stunning film and of great interest. First rate effects and very appealing on the eye. Highly recommended especially the naval battle scenes. If you like the Elizabethian period buy it its a good film.

  Elizabeth-The Golden Age

From the director of the seven-time Oscar nominated Elizabeth, Academy Award Winner and 2008 Golden Globe Award nominee Cate Blanchett returns to her role as Queen Elizabeth 1 in the story of one woman's crusade to control love, defend her empire and secure her postion as a beloved icon of the western world.

Reunited with Geoffrey Rush and also starring Clive Owen as Sir Walter Raleigh, a dashing seafarer in whom Elizabeth finds newfound temptation.
Laced with passion, suspense and betrayal, Elizabeth-The Golden Age is an enthralling epic-complete with breathtaking scenery, sumptuous costumes and stunning performances.

Cate Blanchett plays this role so well, the story not quite true to history, but an excellent watch nonetheless.
5/5

Elizabeth the Golden Age - great to watch, much license
Review created: 29/01/08

Cate Blanchett is luminous throughout. One scene stands out as an example - where Elizabeth, in full shining battle armour and on horseback, red waist-length hair blowing, delivers a Churchillian clifftop speech to the men of England, empire gripped in the jaws of the Spanish Armada. This alone makes it worth watching this film. The scene is pure patriotic sentimentality and of very doubtful historical verisimilitude. Some will despise the director for this but I found it one of the most beautiful few minutes of cinema I have seen for a long time.

Otherwise, the romance between the Queen and Raleigh (Clive Owen) is a little cheesy but not untolerably cringeworthy and Drake's role in the defeat of the Armada is reduced to a cameo.

In summary the spellbinding lead performance and the beautiful cinematography are memorable and there are many other fine details.

thought i would give up the will to live just looking at the title and having daughter with teething twins wanting to watch it.
but with daughter looking so excited at our "movie night" in and i could see both little angel boys mentally making contract with lucifer to get their toy town dvd playing instead i settled back armed with prozac for a "quiet evening".
Admittidly it took more pauses (and several battery changes) on remote control than i ever thought possible .
but eventually this dvd did end . and beleive it or not
i enjoyed it
it was fast moving with eye candy for us ladies had the love not returned sadness but the happy ending with a little gore chucked in for good measure costumes were excellent .....beware not sure if thought this before or after the prozac...... grandma with a life...

  ENJOYABLE FILM WORTH A VIEWING
Review created: 02/06/08
by:

I bought this dvd as I have always been a fan of the Elizabethan era and had also watched and enjoyed the first film by Cate Blanchett of Elizabeth 1st.
I was not disappointed it continues with her story, telling us of The Armarda and also her relationship and misgivings with mary Queen of Scots.
It is a gripping film, even better than the 1st and well cast and well worth a viewing.

Historically, very poorly narrated and not accurate at all.
The naval battle is almost inexistent.
Elizabeth's palace is the Ely Cathedral all the time!
The only good thing is the costumes.
Do not waste your money and time in this movie.

a cracking yarn, with some historical truths
Review created: 06/05/08

Don't dismiss this as yet another Eliz Tudor movie. Kate is just as good as Glenda Jackson in the leading role! Great costumes, especially Elizabeths! The cast were all good, although the courtier [ who plays Lewises sidekick policeman in another life] was a disappointingly a bit wooden.
The pace is captivating ...no chance of falling asleep watching this one!
My only gripe is that there were some historical inaccuracies such as Raleigh's role in the Armada. The film leads you to think that he won it single handedly. Drake and Howard were not even mentioned!
Overall...recommended!

  The Golden Age,- well almost
Review created: 03/05/08

As a person that like alot of action and adventure I found that this film didn't quite meet expectations. However, as an historical drama about the building of the british empire it is up there amongst the best films.
Queen Elizabeth fighting not only enemies from within her own court but from abroad.
Overall not an excellant 'watch at all cost' film but worthy of spending a night in with a bottle of wine.

Review created: 08/04/08

No where near as good as the first film. If you want a good film about these events, try ELIZABETH with Helen Miram as the Virgin Queen and Jeremy Irons as Robert Dudley (a major character who was for some unknown reason, entirely LEFT OUT of The Golden Age!)
I also recommend Richard Burton as Henrry the VIII in the film, ANN OF A THOUSAND DAYS, to find out what happened to Elizabeth's parents!

Elizabeth - The Golden Age DVD
Review created: 30/03/08

I loved the first film and couldn't wait to see the Golden Age.Cate Blanchett is perfectly cast as Elizabeth, and Geoffrey Rush is back as an aging Walsingham. Clive Owen seems to have been put in as eye candy, and doesn't really add much to the story. Depsite some inaccurate historical facts, its still a great film, although not as stirring and emotional as the first.

  Elizabeth Rules!!!!!!
Review created: 08/03/08

What a great film. I wasn't sure what to expect with this film but now that I have watched the film 3 times it has definatly made me want to get the first film "Elizabeth". I can understand why the first film was nominated for 7 Oscars and won both an Academy award and a 2008 Golden Globe award.
The film covers both the political and personal troubles of Elizabeth 1. It shows the jealousies that were abound in the royal court - who would be the winner of the hand of the Virgin Queen?(unobtainable and untouched). The political intrigue is plentiful, with Phillip of Spain doing his utmost to conquer England and Mary Queen of Scots also trying to usurp the throne while imprisoned.
Fighting on two fronts politically and battlling with her own emotions and jealousies for Sir Walter Raleigh(brillantly played by Clive Owen). This film is a masterpiece. The battle scenes are out of this world particularly the Spanish Armada fight and Cate Blanchett brings to life Elizabeth 1 in all her moods superbly. She was not just a Queen defending her country and her people she was also a woman with everything that goes with it the need to be loved and yet to be chaste. The need to appear strong and yet troubled and sometimes alittle fragile and afraid. This is definately one to watch with plenty of popcorn and coke and the lights out either on your own or with friends making a night of it you won't be disappointed.
