This film is an absolute classic, made with an artistic sensetivity second to none. One of the few films that has ever made me cry and I mean a full on bawl, complete with tears and baby noises.

This is a display of human curiosity snowballing into animal cruelty and the transforming power of human compassion in giving us all what we most desire, to feel wanted and loved.

I wanted to get a copy of this film for years - since first seeing it as a child. It remains an absolute classic! Anthony Hopkins doesn't normally appeal to me (except maybe in 'Desperate Hours'), but in this - perfect. Barber's string theme has been overdone now in films, it's true, but this was probably its first cinematic use(?) - and to stunning effect. This film's simple power will still educate the young and humble us all. I won't attempt to critique John Hurt's work in this film, because I am truly not worthy. WATCH IT. Thank-you.

  The Elephant Man (DVD2001)
Review created: 23/04/08

The Elephant Man is a wonderful, thought prevoking film. It's the TRUE story of John Merrick, who lived over a hundred years ago, when medical knowledge was nowhere near as advanced as it is today. He had a condition that caused large growths over almost his entire body. He was very badly deformed because of it. The film centers around his life and shows how he went from being a freak show exhibit to the toast of London society thanks to the kindness of one doctor who took John under his wing. Brillent acting with John Hurt playing the lead role.

then elephant man is my favourite film because it is a true story of a man born with severe difformaties and the way the human race treat them especially in the victorian times. The film is very sad.
I had watched this film on t.v with my mother so when i saw it on eBay i had to bid for it.

  The Finest Film Ever Made

I think the title says it all. David Lynch surpassed himself to create what is in my opinion the greatest film of all time. Beautifully shot, superb performances from the entire cast, this film has the power to make the audience experience so many emotions from the outset. The shock at Joseph (John) Merrick appearence, the warmth that Dr.Treeves portrays towards him, the horror at his treatment from both his "keeper" and the hospital porter, the desperation as Merrick is chased around the railway station, and the many, many deeply moving scenes. There are few films that have ever had me in tears... this one managed it twice. It may not be an entirely accurate portrayal of Merrick's life story (for example, Merrick joined the circus freak show by choice in real life, and was treated well by the circus staff and performers while he was with them), but these do not do anything to detract the enjoyment of this film. You owe it to yourself to watch this film at least once. Behind his terrible deformities, Merrick truly was the epitome of the English gentleman.

One of David Lynch's earliest films and still his best. A unique and moving exploration of the outcast.

I decided to look for this item on e bay after reminiscing about my exams at school when this was one of the films that I studies. I then realised I had only seen it the once and could not find it absolutely anywhere in the high street until i looked on e bay, I watched the film when it arrived and it was just as heart wrenching as when I first watched it. I would recommend it to absolutely everyone especiallt those who like the true life stories. This is one that will really make you feel sorry for John Merrick and the life he must have had. Very true to life.

Elephant Man...A Film you will never forget!
Review created: 01/09/06

Based on a true story, this moving film stars John Hurt fresh from critical acclaim in I Claudius. It gives an insight into Victorian cruelty and kindness in true Charles Dickens fashion.
Based on a true story with a cast of the very best British actors/actresses.Directed by David Lynch in Black& White it captures the atmostphere perfectly of Victorian England.John Hurt should have won an Oscar but didn't. I bought this DVD because it is basically one of the finest films ever made.
