The Finest Film Ever Made

I think the title says it all. David Lynch surpassed himself to create what is in my opinion the greatest film of all time. Beautifully shot, superb performances from the entire cast, this film has the power to make the audience experience so many emotions from the outset. The shock at Joseph (John) Merrick appearence, the warmth that Dr.Treeves portrays towards him, the horror at his treatment from both his "keeper" and the hospital porter, the desperation as Merrick is chased around the railway station, and the many, many deeply moving scenes. There are few films that have ever had me in tears... this one managed it twice. It may not be an entirely accurate portrayal of Merrick's life story (for example, Merrick joined the circus freak show by choice in real life, and was treated well by the circus staff and performers while he was with them), but these do not do anything to detract the enjoyment of this film. You owe it to yourself to watch this film at least once. Behind his terrible deformities, Merrick truly was the epitome of the English gentleman.
