And with this album, with New-Romaticism in full flow, and the synth ruling the airwaves and the charts, Jeff Lynne pulls his normal trick of ignoring current musical trends and just doing what he wants.

This makes for great fun, in what is a very tongue in cheek album, from the title itself, to the constant backwards masking throughout the album.

Initially proposed as a double LP, to which the record company said "no", after all, nobody did double albums in the mid-1980s, the condensed result is an assault on the listener, covering as it does a variety of musical styles, and involving top quality musicians.

From the opening backward message "welcome to the show", to the morse code "ELO" running through the title track, this album once again showcases Jeff Lynne as a songwriter / producer of the highest level - we even get "Dennis the dog" barking at the end of "Bluebird".

Contains a legitimate hit single in "Rock n roll is king", and a forgotten gem in "Stranger", this album, whilst not providing the frightening hights of "Out of the blue", contains enough to further enhance Jeff Lynnes reputation.

I bought it for Bluebird and Rock n' Roll Is King. The rest is OK and easy listening while on the daily commute. Worthy of a listen.

  Elo/Secret messages

It's not so much about the album itself,I like it because of a time it takes me back to in my youth.I'd just left school in 83,a year after this album came out and this was the second album ever that I bought, the first being "Out of the blue",also by Elo.
Everybody has favourite albums, artists and songs and I think I can safely say it,s not always about the music,it's about the mood it puts you in or the things in your life that happened the first time you heared it.
This album was slated as being weak when it first came out,not to Elo's usual standard as some critics said,I can agree with this in some respects but it can't take away the memorys of my first proper girlfriend, first kiss, good times as a teenager or the people in my life that have since passed away.
Aah.....Happy days.....:-)
