Album Notes The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar, bass); Noel Redding (vocals, bass); Mitch Mitchell (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Chris Wood (flute); Freddie Smith (tenor saxophone); Al Kooper (piano); Mike Finnigan, Steve Winwood (organ); Jack Casady (bass); Buddy Miles (drums); Larry Faucette (congas).Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968. Originally released on Reprise. Includes liner notes by Derek Taylor. On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)." Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on the chitlin' circuit (Earl King's "Come On [Part 1]"), a Bob Dylan favorite ("All Along The Watchtower"), and one of his snappiest singles ("Crosstown Traffic"). Although Hendrix produced and wrote most of this masterpiece, others weighed in with their own contributions. Noel Redding penned "Little Miss Strange," and other guests such as Al Kooper and Buddy Miles showed up to play. Traffic's Steve Winwood and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane also made cameos, appearing on this classic album's spiritual center, "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)." Jimi is a legend and music would not be the same without him. If you own only one album by him, make it this one. This has some amazing blues, searing rock and some more off beat psychedelic stuff too. It moved Jimi away from him more 'pop' leanings from the first two albums and showed what his talents were truly capable of. An excellent album, where every track is a gem. For me, this alum is good as there are so many gust musicians, each intertwining their own music with Hendrix. Buy one and find out! Review ID: 10000000007108769 Was this review helpful? Report this review I love this album. This is Jimi in the studio. It has the melodic and spacey track "1983.. a merman I will return to be", not readily available on compilation albums. We have superb sax playing and the best wah wah guitar on "rainy day dream away". The stereo effects are fantastic with the guitar fading and soaring across the speakers. This could be the best Hendrix production ever. Review ID: 10000000004507223 Was this review helpful? If you like it...his live stuff(Band of Gypsys) is even better. XXX Review ID: 10000000004200766 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
