This is the debut album from Birmingham-based indie band Editors. Despite comparisons with Interpol and Joy Division, Editors are their own original force."Lights" and "Munich" start off the the record with an incredible one-two punch."Lights" is full of Tom Smiths's dark and full vocals and those eerie atmospheric guitars. It's quite an epic and a great start."Munich" is probably the best song on the album and easily one of the songs of the year."Blood" is also a great tune."Fall" slows us up a bit, Tom's voice really sounds breathtaking here. A gorgeous track that will leave your spine tingling. "Fingers In The Factories" has a bit of a dark pop feel to it. Creepy atmospheric guitars, that pounding drumbeat all make for a exceptional track. "Bullets" sounds huge here, the placement on the album is perfect and so is the song. Coming towards the end of the album "Someone Says" is an excellent track with a fast-paced chorus. It would make a great single."Open Your Arms" is a bleak and miserable sounding track that is hard to keep a dry eye to."Distance" is another dark bleak affair, but there is also a hint of optimism here. It's a stunning end to an incredible album. The whole package is here and will not disappoint.

  Good work - great debut!

The Back Room has given birth to four great singles, classic indie floor fillers. Editors have stormed the live circuit this year, proving themselves to be a cut above the current mass crop of Brit-rock bands. And it is very easy to draw comparisons with Joy Division and Echo & The Bunnymen - Editors have clearly used these bands as a reference point. But Editors have produced a debut album that is much more than just a tribute to these bands that walked before them.
The Back Room is an album alive with fever and contention. It remains upbeat and lively but challenges with every track - from the angry 'Bullets' to the floaty, dreamlike 'Distance'. There is a powerful imagery in all of the lyrics, a bitter emotion and visceral energy which supported by moody guitars and strong drums all helps to conjure up a drama that makes this album one of the finest works of 2005. Comparisons aside, Editors have supplied a more than competent first effort which everyone should hear at least once... and if once is enough I'd be very surprised!

When the first single"Munich" came out I said to myself and to my friends this band are going to be huge, nobody agreed with me at the time, but look at them now. This is one of the best debut albums I have ever heard and deserves its 5 out of 5 status. You must own a copy of this classic debut.Nuff said.

  Ok for a cheap price

The singles stick out like a sore thumb on this very average CD. I didn't pay much for it and I feel I would have been robbed if I had paid more. Equally, if I had paid less, I would have felt I got a bargain

  Bring it on!!
Review created: 13/10/08

I'm not going to rabbitt on for ages about this CD - thank God I hear you say!!
This is an absolute must for any rock music fan - excellent production - great sound - memorable tunes - what more can you want? I'll avoid any comparisions to other bands cos at the end of the day - life is too short - this band stand on there own to feet & are great to listen to - there might be the odd nod & a wink to others but it doesn't detract from the enjoyability or come across as a rip off - highly recommended by me - can't wait for the next album!

well worth buying (here on ebay for around £4-5), if you've listened to 'An End Has A Start', again some great singles supported well by other songs in the album. Can't argue for under a fiver!

if you like the undertones, joy division, echo and the bunnymen this kind of post punk/rock/indie is for you, a little more raw than recent records, editors succeed where other bands have failed, writing songs on life experiences they still manage to uplift and acknowledge the true meaning of life.... this album is that good i have purchased my this copy to replace my battered one.....

It takes more than one good track to make a good album
Review created: 07/05/07

Ok, so to be honest, I bought this album for the one track that everybody recognises - Munich - the catchy one with the cool black and white video that you see on MTV. I have to say that although the rest of the album fails to live up to the heights of this track, it does make pretty good listening. It fits in with the whole Kasabian listening - edgy pop that's easily serious enough to be viewed as proper music. Not rock, not pop, just good honest listening.
Buy it, play it, but don't just listen to the one song before putting just that one on your ipod. Give the rest a chance.
