Growing up in Tottenham in the early 70's I was equally happy listening to both Trojan reggae with my mate Mick and also to the prog rock stuff that other mates older brothers played. In fact Mick and I formed a school band and used to play a shortend reggae version of Yes' 'Close to the Edge', so buying this album was a no-brainer for me !
However if you have an open mind - and Floyd certainly did - then you can have little or no background in reggae and still enjoy this recording immensly !
'Breathe' is really good and although 'On The Run' remains suitably trippy, 'Time' gets ruined by a little too much toasting and so - unlike the rest of the album - looses the feel of the original. Hoever the instrumental bonus track works much better stripped of vocals.
'Money' quite strangley sticks to the odd tempo of the original baseline instead of using a typical 'spaced' reggae baseline ( a missed chance there chaps ! ) but is still fun as is the remainder of the album. However, 'Us and Them' is really cracking !
Overall this is a fascinating album - the whole reggae tradition of doing cover numbers works well, especially as much of the non-rhythmn section instrumentation ( and female backing singing ) is faithfull to the original Floyd recording.
Also worthy of praise are the sleeve notes - three full pages of the how and why that reveal the context of the recording and so add so much to the listeners enjoyment.
Get this - and perhaps also the Sgt Rastas Dub Hearts Band cd - sit back with an open mind and enjoy !
