Duran Duran - The Singles 1981-1985 13 x CD Box Set

This singles collection spans the height of their career from their very first single 'Planet Earth' to their James Bond theme tune 'A View To A Kill', along with the original B-sides - many available for the first time on CD. Packaged in a glossy flip-top box holding 13 CD's in pouchettes - faithfully replicating the original singles sleeve artwork. This box set also includes an A3 poster.

The first thirteen singles by Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor serve as a potent reminder of their excellent musicianship and innovation way back when. These classic singles are absolutely fantastic (10 of them were top ten hits!). Hey kids, these songs were written and performed by the group themselves! Even some of the B-Sides could have been released as singles.

The first single, 'Planet Earth' is top rate new romantic disco with a fast and frenzied bass line and atmospheric synths whilst the band do a new romantic rock out with 'Careless Memories'.

The singles from the classic 'Rio' album are all here including the single remix of 'My Own Way' complete with searing violins - this band were never afraid to experiment with their sound.

The Beatlesque 'Is There Something Something I Should Know' is pure pop excellence and 'The Reflex' and 'Wild Boys' remind you that this group were at the top of the pop tree during the 80's.

The final single by the classic line up, the James Bond theme tune 'A View To A Kill' must surely rate as one of their best ever singles, mixing the unique James Bond sound with a mature Duran Duran style.

An ideal companion to this box set, The Singles 1986-1995 14 CD Box Set

HAIL THE 1980's & HAIL THE BAND THAT DEFINED THEM
Review created: 12/05/08

Yes, it was the era of lipstick, eyeliner, white shoes, brightly coloured hair & that was just the guys. There are many things that can be said about the 1980's. There were many bands who had massive hits but none of them WERE the 1980's, unlike Duran Duran who were the definitive band of that particular era & Duran Duran - The Singles Collection 1981 -1985 certainly captures that. From Planet Earth released in 1981 through to A View to A Kill (1985) all the singles come in the original sleeve design. If you are a Duran Duran fan & had their singles from that period then looking at the sleeves again in CD format is quite something. On top of this though & the best part is the fact that not only do you get the single but you get the 12 inch mix & the B side of each single all on each CD. Apart from writing some great songs in the 80's & shooting outstanding videos, Duran Duran mixed some of the best 12 inch versions of their songs. Night versions may be a more accurate name on some of the earlier ones. Wilder than the Wild Boys mix - OUTSTANDING!!! The B sides though are the lost gems. Again, DD performed some great B sides. Late Bar, make me smile (come up & see me) & Secret Oktober to name but a few. This is a must for any nostalgic Duran Duran fan. 11 out of 10.
