could have been better but not bad
Review created: 10/09/09

The Duchess is an autibiographical movie about Duchess of Devonshire Georgiana Cavendish. Its a good film and covers most aspects of her life but by leaving out a five year period of her life it also misses out some of the most important things that happened to her and leaves you feeling a little lost for a short time while you try and fill in the gaps with retrospective comments from the characters. not a very well though out film but entertaining none the less. id recommend it to anyone with an interest in British historical figures.

Great film, due to Kiera it will never be a classic

Great film with inbredible time and effort put into it.
It is a pity Kiera muddles it up and loses the argument.
The Duke is far more believable...

I feel the same thing happened like the last rendition on Pride & Prejudice...

I bought this having read the book (which was excellent). I didn't immediately identify the two as being the same thing as there's a lot more contained in the book, as one would expect. What I did find was a most moving and well acted drama about Georgiana and her difficult life. I highly recommend this version of the film. ALL the acting was excellent and the film was well casted and executed. A++++++++++++++

  my review of the Duchess
Review created: 06/05/09

I love period drama and this period n histry in particular, and was enchanted with the settings and costumes but oh dear dear...Keira is so absolutely delightful, but all I kept thinking was...thats Keira Knighty, and not the character she was trying to portray.

mind you, i thought the same thing about her in Pride and Prejudice.....so it might just be me!!

so please buy, and watch, and hopefully enjoy

Excellent true story portraying the life of the Duchess of Devonshire, ancestor of Princes Diana. Saddly their love life was so very similar. Very well acted - a film to watch time and time again!

  unmissable entertainment!
Review created: 09/04/09

Set against breathtaking backdrops and flawless costumes, the Duchess is an enchanting tale of love, desperation and political marriage. Ralph Fiennes is predictably brilliant as the pressured Duke of Devonshire; Kiera Knightly is, well, predictable. The score is a perfect accompaniment to the emotional maelstrom. The story is an unpredictable tangle of love interest and self interest versus marriage, culminating in an honest ending. Towers above other period dramas in it's portrail of haughty decandence and the tedium of upper class life.

A visually stunning video of mid 18th century aristocratic England and quite a good story too. Minor irritations The carriage arrives at Somerset House (Devonshire House demolished 1920s) The entrance hall is Kedlestone and the corridor is Holkham, Althorpe House is again Kedlestone Although these are minor points and far outweigh this highly visual storyline. An enjoyable dvd which i shall probably watch many times. Chatsworth as Chatsworth is stunning as always. The additional features are fairly good too.
One to watch.
