In fact, with its shuffling stand-up basslines and jumpy trumpet, MEMORY DRAWINGS, at its jauntier moments, is nearly a wordless Soul Coughing. Elsewhere, ambience dominates via shimmering guitars that let Jeff J. Jacobs's horn flutter in the foreground. By hopping between moods and tempos, MEMORY resonates where other imitators would dive into corny cliche.
